The physics look lame because the vid is from 2 months ago. The West
brothers have said that the physics are nowhere near complete, and that was
just last week, so this 2 month old development video really does nothing
except show off the awesome 3D car model (visual that is)

Oooh, I approve!
the car physics looked lame, looked more like gp3 than gpl

The problem with GPL is that the self aligning torque of the tires isn't
modeled well, so when you get the rear end out and reduce some throttle or
decrease steering/apply opposite lock to regain traction, the rear end
doesnt snap back like it should, but just keeps on sliding. This is the one
thing that makes GPL harder than it should be. I know it is early to tell
with WSC, but judging from the movie I saw, WSC models the self aligning
torque real well. One way to see it is at 25 seconds into the lotus movie.
The car is spun, but doesn't just keep on sliding like in GPL, but the rears
eventually catch when the speed drops low enough and then you see the body
rock a little from the inertia as it stops. In GPL, if you get a slide like
that going, it just keeps on sliding sideways and you have no chance to save
the car OR get going again fast. One way to see this is get the car loose
on the enterance to Parabolica and then turn into the turn. The rear end
will slide out and wont come back. Eventually you will either go off the
track or spin. Oh well, too much typing for me. GPL's engine is great, but
I think the self aligning torque is the one thing they really missed.

They had slapped it together just for people to use so they could drive
around the tracks and look at the detail. The real physics engine was still
be programmed.

So give it a res, please. No need to flame a "half" finished product.

Quite
clearly the gfx are mostly finished, so thats 6-8 months for physics
programming.
Gotta be good

You are correct, that is my only complaint with gpl.

into a simulation of race cars, the easier it will be to drive. He then
mentions about putting a 67 F1 car into WSC to prove his point.WSC's
tire model is more complex than GPL so well haveto see.Allison Hine
has stated that she feels that the modeling of thestraight line tire
slip is not modeled too well and I think that this has something to do
with GPL's hardness.
One of the things that I feel makes GPL very hard is to extreme of a
weight transfer effect.Have the steering turn the tiniest amount and
lift off the gas and the back end wants to come around. This at 200 mph
and brake bias set to the front???
I dont know how hard these cars were to drive but if they behaved like
this I would be suprised. Then again this is the first real physics
model to come out with realism so we should get better and better:)
