I thought I would help these sorry ass people out. Ok, heres the story:
We have an extensive mailing list of prospective buyers of DTR Sprint
Cars, gathered in our (Ratbag/WizardTurds) 'get the demo early'
campain. If you want to buy advertising space in the demo you are
assured of reaching this 'x' number of people at the very least. The
demo is already 100% finished- so we'd like to hear from you quickly,
if possible, if you want to buy advertising space. Otherwise.. well..
we'll wait if we need to. How long? Well can you make payments on your
advertising space? Advertising space is the thing of the future and
we'd hate for you not to have advertising space. In closing
(advertising space) remember that advertising space is unique. Only
advertising space is quite like advertising space. Our market research
has proved it.

Mockery over delayed Sprint Cars demo and ad sales
A sarcastic post mocked Ratbag and publisher WizardWorks for apparently selling advertising space in the delayed Dirt Track Racing: Sprint Cars demo. Users were annoyed that Ratbag's Chris Bevan had promised the demo 'this week' and it had not appeared, while JB defended Ratbag as constrained by its publisher. Don Wilshe of games-advertising.com said he could have sold more ads but hit a firm cutoff.
Automated summary.
Neat concept, Mark -- is this how they were able to charge only $19 for
DTR from day one, versus the $59 gouge that Hasbro was charging for
GP2.5 when it was released?
Sounds good to me . . .

Also -- and correct me again if I'm wrong -- any deals to put ads in
DTRSC are between Ratbag and Games-Advertising, and there's no way that
Wizard Works would bump THEIR publication schedule just to let Ratbag
make a bit more money.
And, finally, if they are contriving a means of making some money off
advertisers, then why should WE care -- they're not making money off of
US in this bargain (i.e., they don't intend to charge US for the demo),
and the final cost of the game when it hits the shelves IS going to be
$19.95, thanks in part to the advertiser-generated revenue. Would you
rather pay $59 for DTRSC and get the demo early, or would you rather
have to put up with a few more "authentic" trackside billboards and
shell out a few less of your hard-earned dollars for the end product?
Sometimes you guys just baffle me -- next thing you know you'll be
complaining because the damned game companies FORCE you to DOWNLOAD the
game, rather than SENDING you a PERSONAL copy on CD in ADVANCE, which
they should do because you're an elite member of the "hardcore sim

on the r.a.s. newsgroup . . .

Thats my feeling exactly (above.) For what its worth: Ratbag
continues to solicit email addresses 'get the demo early', and
WizardTwerps continues not to even mention Sprints on their website as
a product. More examples of the low level of service these guys are
delivering (WizardTwerps cant even be bothered to list the game on
their website??) The pitiful part is to hear people talk about
WizardTwerps like they are some kind of underdog folk heros, selling
software at bargain bin prices in defiance of 'the man.' But its
obvious from the software they DO list on their website what they
really are: low level middle-men.

It seems to ME like EVERYBODY ELSE has their shorts in a wad over
this. My point is that even though Chris Bevan of Ratbag announced
that the demo was due soon, Ratbag has to answer to their masters at
Wizard Works, so it's most likely NOT Ratbag's fault that there's been
a delay. Ratbag's intentions were good -- nobody was trying to deceive
us . . . and why would they, for heaven's sake? Mark seems to be
alleging that there is a conspiracy afoot, when perhaps it's simply
that things have happened that were beyond Ratbag's control -- and
maybe Mark has been watching too many Oliver Stone movies of late.
Also FWIW, I am the VP of Communications for Games-Advertising, and as
far as I know, there is NO last-minute push to get advertisers into the
DTRSC demo -- ad sales closed quite a while back for this title, and if
there's some last-minute initiative going on related to the demo
itself, then nobody's told me (which is possible, since I've been busy
on other projects, but my guess is that it's NOT ad sales that have
held things up).
So, it seems reasonable to advise the rest of you to not get YOUR
shorts in a wad, pals. Ratbag and Wizard Works are bringing you THE
most awesome sprint car game ever, it's only going to cost $19, and the
ADVANCED demo is going to be FREE, regardless of when they release it,
so it seems to me like there's a lot of complaining going on for
nothing. Could it be that we all have completed the "Beat the Heat"
scenarios in NASCAR Heat and we're itching for something new, perhaps?
And, if you want to talk about delays, would anybody like to discuss
what the latest release date is for N4 or WSC?
Patience is a virtue, but this is a newsgroup . . .

The developer can never control what is dictated to them by the
publisher. In this instance, I think Ratbag COULD have kept their
promises had it not been for external factors beyond their control.
And yet we choose to persecute them for their good intentions -- and we
wonder why more developers don't provide a presence here, and why they
largely seem to ignore this segment of the community.

No, "soon" is a vague and relative term and is clearly not what Ratbag
said. They used the phrase, "this week", which is specific. So when it
failed to happen, people were naturally disappointed.

I also doubt they wished to deceive, but they should have kept their
mouths shut when they don't have the final say on the release date of the
demo. A simple, "sorry, but we made a mistake", on their news page should
suffice.

I agree -- something like that would be nice to see, as a show of good
faith. Otherwise, I don't think we should let our disappointments over
a demo release date throw us into a developer/publisher-bashing
