This one's got me stumped, so I'll throw it off to the experts <g>.
I'm running a P3 800 on an Asus CUV4X motherboard, GEForce2 using the
6.18 drivers. I've been using 128Mb of 133MHz RAM with no problems at
all. Today, I added another 128Mb of identical RAM, and it's working
fine, except in GP3 and NHeat. In GP3, no matter what track I choose,
I go out to practice and it dumps me back to the desktop within one or
two corners. In Heat, no matter what I choose (single race, race the
pro, or beat the heat), it dumps me back to the desktop at the
"...Loading" screen.
Thought at first I had a bad RAM chip, but both of them work just fine
individually, it's just when they're both present at the same time
that I have the problem.
Anybody got any suggestions???
Thanks,
Ian
This may sound like a no-brainer, but check your motherboard specs to
make sure you've got the right slots for multiple RAM chips -- many
motherboards want you to alternate slots when using multiples, rather
than using sequential slots. It DOES make a difference, so check your
motherboard documentation and make sure you're not mis-interpreting
what it says.

It didn't work, but I appreciate
the effort <g>. And I learned something I didn't know before.
Actually, what DID work was something I read in another thread. I
went in and changed the video aperture size (I think that's what was
called) from 64 to 256. Voila, no more problems! Don't know why it
worked, but hell I ain't gonna question it <g>. Weird.
Anyway, thanks again for the effort.

Heat is the only game to crash
because of it.

Hi Ian,
I just thought of something about Nascar Heat. I had 256mb of RAM, 128 +
64 + 64, and Heat always crashed. I gave 64mb to my brother, leaving me
with a lowly 192mb, and now Heat doesn't crash!

it would appear that the faster cpu's are less tolerant of mis matching.

What...? Alternate slots? That's just too stupid for words...

I have seen the same thing. COmpletely non-intuitive. I have also
seen motherboards that want you to put the RAM in the LASTslots
instead of the first slots if you aren't filling all of them. And
here is my personal favorite:
I have a Tyan S1680S motherboard, remarkable because it is a Slot 1,
AT form factor MoBo with 8 slots for 72 pin SIMMS. It works fine,
except if you put ram in the last two slots it won't boot. Seems like
they can't quite pump the signal that hard to get through all those
SIMMS. I managed to cram 2-32M simms and 4-16M simms in it though,
for 128 Meg. It only has 60 & 66 for FSB and sports multipliers up to
6X, but won;t do celerons even with bios upgrade. It currently houses
a very early P2/266 pushed to 300Mhz (pre-multiplier lock) and a
V3/2000 and is my 3 year old's computer. Runs "Paint and draw with
Elmo" and "Barbie riding club" real good.
