Opinions and performance tips for EA's F1 2000

A user asked for the consensus on EA's F1 2000, noting its heavy system requirements. Replies said it looked and sounded best but needed a fast PC; tips included turning off mirrors, disabling force feedback and adding RAM to cure stutters at race starts. Simon Brown's view that track quality varied drew a hostile response from Greg Cisko.

Hi, What is the general consensus over EA F1 2000 sim? I have it but haven't been able to spend much time on it. It's pretty steep in the system requirement department but it is without a doubt the best looking and sounding sim on the market. It's too steep for my system in fact although I have access to one that will handle it (P3 733). I have been playing GP3 and find it to be acceptable but certainly not breath taking. I agree with several of the comments posted here that it is more or less GP 2.5. What are your comments over EA's F1? Thanks Tim

On a 450PII, 3Dfx AGP 2000, doesn't run worth a hoot, so I've returned to GPL, N3 and DTR and am happy as a clam -- I do look at the F1 box from time to time (lessons learned and all that) and I'm waiting on GP3, however... A Pentium II system should run F1 2000 just fine -- you may have to compromise a little on graphics details, but it should be do-able. On my wimpy, mid-range AMD K6-2 400 system (oc'ed from 350) with 64 MB of RAM and an aging 16 MB Voodoo Banshee card (not overclocked), I get pretty decent frame rates in F12000 (in Quick Race mode, I see no less than 15 around the pit areas, up to 30 elsewhere, and averages in the low-to-mid 20s -- very playable and surprisingly smooth). I use FRAPS (http://www.fraps.com/) to check the frame rate, FYI. A PII system should perform much better than my AMD K6 processor, so you should have no problems. Please note that I've also optimized my system using the "Cacheman" utility (www.tweakfiles.com/memory/cacheman.html). I highly recommend this -- it's a cheap, painless way to improve your system's performance overall, and you don't have to be a computer guru to use it (just select the "3D gaming system" or "low memory system" setting and re- boot). Here are the in-game settings I'm using in F12000 -- if you have a 500+ MHz PII or PIII system and a Voodoo 3 or 5, TNT2, or GeForce video card, you should be getting MUCH better performance than I am seeing using these same settings. Also, make sure you're using the 1.09 patch (you can get it at the Blackhole Motorsports site -- http://www.bhmotorsports.com/). Give them a try, and you might be surprised: DISPLAY SETTINGS Cockpit: Cockpit detail - High Moving steering wheel - off Mirrors - off <THIS IS CRITICAL> Miscellaneous (mirrors) - off Trees (mirrors) - off Billboards (mirrors) - off Buildings (mirrors) - off Bridges (mirrors) - off Grandstands (mirrors) - off Pit lane objects (mirrors) - off <THIS IS CRITICAL!> Special Effects: Bilinear Filtering - Off Specular Highlighting - Off Environment Mapping - Off Race Groove - On Skybox - Off Everything else Off Miscellaneous: Movies - Off Tooltips - 1.5 Measurement Units - Imperial Page Transitions - Off Placement Map - Off Message Center Detail - High Default View - Cockpit World: Resolution - 800x600 Viewing Distance - Maximum Level of Detail Distance - Maximum Fog Distance - Low Texture Mapping Detail - Low Player Vehicle Detail - Low Other Driver Vehicle Detail - Low Max. All in all, the overall experience with F12000 now reminds me of when I first started playing GPL on my old AMD K6-200 system with 16 MB of RAM and a first-generation Voodoo card. On that system, I had to play at 640x480 resolution, with mirrors turned off and world details cut back, but it was great. If it hadn't been for GPL, I would probably still have that system, in fact -- the upgrades were more than worth it for GPL, but not really necessary for any other reason. Ah, well -- that's progress! <G> You can also get a performance boost by running in "Window Mode" (change the config.ini file so to run the game in a window - this should increase the frame rate but not in all cases apparantly). You might also try altering your system rating in the config.ini file. Hope this helps a bit! -- JB In article <8q5g5f$pac$[email hidden]>, [email hidden] wrote:

One thing I forgot to mention -- if you do use Windowed mode, you won't be able to view your frame rate with FRAPS; FRAPS only works in full- screen mode. Try it in full-screen mode with FRAPS first to try to see what you're getting, and if that seems satisfactory, then try switching to Windowed mode to see if it feels any better. -- JB In article <8q5oso$4gh$[email hidden]>, [email hidden] wrote:

> it is without a doubt the best looking > and sounding sim on the market Hmm...can't agree with that :), but anyway, yep it does need a fast PC, particularly if you want to be racing and not just hot-lapping. The tracks are a real mixed bag. Some are excellent, like Spain and Imola and some others are quite poor, like Monaco and Spa. Also it's a shame the replays don't match the quality of the in-car graphics. The physics are, in my opinion, superior to GP3. The cars feel like they've got grooved tyres. Also the way the cars react over bumps and curbs 'feels' more realistic than GP3. The 3D engine is more up-to-date, but less well optimized compared with GP3. I think we're still waiting for a really top-notch F1 sim.

Everything this wiener said about the tracks is BS. He makes it sound like the game is unplayable. That is totally wrong. I really like F12000, especially after updating it with the patch and putting in a celeron 566 overclocked to 850 mhz. Still somewhat of a graphics hog, but it looks better and handles better. I don't get to spend as much time with it as I would like, as Nascar is my first love, but based on what I have read here about GP3, I think F12000 will give me all the F1 action I need. -- Don Burnette Dburn in N3 and Legends ICQ# 74084566 "Tim Ferrell" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:39c63c8a$0$35387$[email hidden]... > Hi, > What is the general consensus over EA F1 2000 sim? You are being a little unfair there, I complemented the good points as well as pointing out the bad. I'm sure he wanted a realistic opinion. In my opinion the circuits aren't all up to the same standard. I have a video from the real sport showing a complete lap from Monaco from an on-board camera, and some bits of the Monaco in F1 2000 are not right. The section between Casino and Mirabeau should be downhill at about 30 degrees and it isn't in F1 2000. Also the bumps in the tunnel are not there in real life. So it's not BS, it's actually based on something. And yes, it does need a fast PC, as almost everyone who has posted in this thread has said themselves. And where did I say it was unplayable? In fact I complemented the physics and the feel of the game. "Greg Cisko" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:FXwx5.10029$[email hidden]...

Greg, maybe you mis-read or mis-understood some of those comments. This comment- > it is without a doubt the best looking > and sounding sim on the market > > Hmm...can't agree with that :), is comparing with GPL, not with GP3. I agree F1 2000 has better sound and a more advanced 3d engine than GP3. Also these comments - > The physics are, in my opinion, superior to GP3. The cars feel like > they've > got grooved tyres. Also the way the cars react over bumps and curbs > 'feels' > more realistic than GP3. are saying F1 2000 has better physics and a better feel than GP3. And as for- > The 3D engine is more up-to-date, but less well > optimized compared with GP3. Well, take a look at JB's post above and see the amount of details he has to turn off to get 30 fps, including mirrors and setting texture detail to low, on his average PC. Maybe I should have said it needs a fast computer to run "with all the details turned on". Anyway, hope that clears things up.

F1-2000 Still a system hog... I've got a Falcon Northwest, PIII 933, on a 133 bus, with 128meg of 133SDRAM, also running a Hercules 64 Meg GeForce 2 GTS. With all graphic options turned full up (mirrors and all) I get decent FPS when hotlapping, or during a race when by myself on the track, but at the start of a race it's VERY choppy...and with more than just one car nearby it's I also take a major framerate hit.... Needless to say, by today's standards my system is as bad-ass as you'll find, and this game still test's it abilities... Perhaps when the Pentium 4 and Voodoo 5 6000 hits the market, or the new Nvidia chipset next spring we'll be able to run this game full tilt boogie? Until then.... it's a matter of tweaking your settings... Frankly to think this game will run decent on a PII 450 or similar, well... I gotta think "what is your definition of decent?" I have a PIII 700, 128meg of ram and a Voodoo 5500 and still could not get decent frame rates. Then I read somewhere that force-feedback might be the problem. I turned it off and gameplay became much, much smoother. This may not apply in your case but it worked in mine. On the other hand, since I really prefer force-feedback, this is something of a sacrifice to make for framerate. BD On Tue, 19 Sep 2000 03:07:15 GMT, "Jay J" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Hi I have been playing with 64mb and recently upgrade to 192mb ram WOW what a difference it made !!! PREVIOUSLY ========================== at the start of a race, it would slow mo for a while making a clean get away completely hopeless ( which in turn makes me the target for rear ending by zonta ) I had to run with texture at medium. TEXTURE is the biggest drain on framerate. Ran races only at 11 players. max. Players vehicles at medium, etc NOW ===================== Almost everything at max and still no slow mo. IN FACT , TRIED everything to max and still it does not slow down. ONCE did manage to get some slow down only to discover I had fuel to full load ( !! ) which was why it did not quite go as fast. I am still trying ( to make framerate go down ) but almost all MAX OUT NOW................ The biggest surprise is my system is only the entry level Cel o/c to 450. TNT ( 1st generation ) and of course the 192 ram.! also used the latest patch , config system to 5 ( a MUST ) **** still having difficulties understanding ram made such a diff ****** <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8q5jio$tlt$[email hidden]...

I have 192mb also. Driving F12000 a few days ago, and was seeing those "stutters" while driving, (like small pauses), and -lots- of them. I knew something was wrong. A re-boot showed only 64mb present. Somehow the 128mb simm was un-seated or received a surge of voltage. Removing, then a re-seat of the 128mb simm, and F12000 is smooth as glass again (race-starts still -suck- but the rest is fine). Matt
