Bandwidth needed to host 43-car NASCAR Heat online

David L. Cook noted that hosting a 43-car NASCAR Heat online race would need about a 1.8Mbps connection. Regular Racer claimed Sprint Broadband wireless offered 8Mbps for $39 a month, which others disputed. The thread became an argument about broadband speeds, latency and availability in the US.

That's right. Here's what you need to make it happen: A 1,782K pipe. Sound out of the question? Not really. There's a new ISP in my town that is offering wireless access to the net at 3Mbps/3Mbps. That's up and down. They said realistically it will be more like 2.5Mbps but still for hosting NH we could have a blast! The bitch is that it cost $1400 for the equipment to get set up. The monthly fees are comparable with DSL. If we could get Bill Bollinger (Amish) and his gang at http://www.raceserver.net to write a front end for Multiplayer (with chat) that could keep track of race stats I'm sure NH on-line would be a HUGE success (even without multiplayer yellows). Let's do this :) --David Cook

Try checking SPRINT WIRELESS. They have where I am for $39 US/Month. You get 8mbs/second on the UP and DOWNLOAD! "David L. You won't even get close to that if you added the two numbers together. If I were guessing, I would have to say that is not even possible, given the technology now available. And if it is, were talking T3 speeds. I hope you got a guarantee on those speeds. They can tell you one thing; but there's no way they can deliver on the promise that you've given. It's just impossible. Alanb

Its 8 megabits/second which works out to about 1 meg/second transfers. I have a service that locally that goes to 11 megabits/sec but its very expensive at this point. And yes 8 meg/second is possible but you better have a big bank account. :-) Pete "Alan Bernardo" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:qHty5.4829$[email hidden]...

Sorry, but it's not a hose job....My friend has it and I"ve seen it in person. SPRINT WIRELESS is a line of sight system. If you don't believe me, feel free to check it out at their own website. -Cheers! "Alan Bernardo" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:qHty5.4829$[email hidden]...

Even 1 meg/second transfer, though possible, as you say, is not going to run only 40 bucks a month. I'm guessing the guy gets about 1500 kbps, which is a far cry from what he is claiming. $40/month DOES buy you at least ONE MEGABYTE/SECOND.....I know quite a few people with SPRINT WIRELESS....100% satisfication from everyone I've talked. And I'll be next on the list in a few weeks. Wireless, is a whole new game. Not sure what the cost with a big provider would be like. In Canada our ADSL is dirt cheap compared to most U.S. services. I have 128k/1000k for 29.99 a month unlimited, they will be upping that shortly for the same money. So hard to say. Hmmm....Well, since the folks that I know who have are different gamers than I am (they prefer Diablo, Quake, etcetera...I can't give a perspective on this one way or another) I've only observed them on-line doing regular stuff (surfing, file download, e-mailt, etc) "Remco Moedt" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > "Regular Racer" <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >Just go to SPRINT WIRELESS website....No use arguing the data transferrate > >on this newsgroup. > > Ok, huge bandwidth......what about the latency? > > Remco >
Okay, so it says it's up to 50x faster than a 56k modem. Does that really translate to 1 meg a second? I must admit that I don't get those kinds of speeds with my cable modem, but I at least get pretty close, maybe 45x faster. Checking a few days ago, I recorded >Your download speed : 1482649 bps, or 1482 kbps. >Browsers would show : about a 180.9 k/sec transfer rate. This is 181k a second. You're claiming to get nearly ten times that much, right? The numbers just don't add up. Do I have something wrong here? Wouldn't it read 450x (or thereabouts) faster than a 56k if you were getting 1 meg a second? Someone enlighten me if I got things all screwed up here. Alanb
Well, the MSN website speedchecker had it pegged off the scale. Also the "icon" showed it around the orignal posted speed also. As far as the validity of those sources are concerned, your guess is as good as mine.... "Alan Bernardo" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:1dPy5.4940$[email hidden]...

Does anyone have the URL for the page where Sprint Wireless shows these prices and transfer rates? I'd love to take a look at it. I've poked around on the Sprint site but can't find it. Thanks! Alison On Thu, 21 Sep 2000 20:42:37 -0700, "Regular Racer" <[email hidden]> wrote:

As usual, I get the old "At this time, our service is not available in your market area. " bullshit. I get it with DSL too :( Oh, well. I guess I should be happy with cable, but when it's cox/roadrunner in Northern VA, with it's latency and packet loss problems, they make it so EASY to want to change :( -Larry Regular Racer wrote:

Don't be sad... For every person that can get this stuff, there are MILLIONS that can't in this country. Broadband access is a bad joke in the US. -Larry Andy Laurence wrote:
