Each Winston Cup race team uses an assigned set of radio frequencies
for communication between pit and driver. Many fans carry a radio
scanner to the race with them so they can follow the developing race
story more closely. To do this, you need to know what those
frequencies are so you can program your scanner to read them. It a
big improvement over trying to hear what the track anounncer is saying
or the radio coverage of the race.
When you don't know who the drivers are or what is going on with them,
it really is just brightly colored cars driving around in circles...

Pitcrews and drivers communicate via radio. Audience members can tune
in on the conversations if they have headsets and know the freq. One
can even rent a headset at certain tracks.
