Exactly same happened to me, haven't played it after the day I bought it.
And I'm also
wondering those magazines.... You get the impression of it being better than
it really is.
IMHO GP3 is pile of !"#&"!%/

I bought GP3 the moment it appeared in the shops, now several months ago,
but I hardly ever play it. From time to time I startup the program but even
after a few minutes I quit.
Reasons: the feeling just isn't right. You never get that feeling that you
actualy drive a car, instead of controlling a view bitmaps with your
joystick. There are to many glithces in the handling of the car. Furthermore
I am very dissapointing with the graphics, which are average at best.
But the most disappointing to me is that no magazine, and really no magazine
at all, has written about these flaws. All reviews of GP3 are basically the
same, they even have the same screen-shots! And I still have to find the
quality of those screen shots on my game. The conclusions are always the
same: great game, new benchmark etc. I cannot believe the reviewers actually
played the game, I suspect them of printing a text which has been provided
by Hasbro, along with a big bag of money.

Too bad it doesn't work OK for you :(
How it runs depends on your cpu, graphics card and controller.
Playing GP3 with the right hardware is awesome.
Try lower your screen resolution and make sure to disable steering help.
You should consider replacing your joystick with a Wheel, preferably a
force feedback.

You both have the same problem, you do not play GP3 enough to grow into it.
At first it feels strange and not like a car, but after a while you start to
understand it's feedback and get a great feeling for the car it simulates.

All I do now is the odd practice session at Spa.

I think that F1 2000K is good too but not as good as GP3.
If you had a little more patience and tried it out properly you might
just think otherwise. And for the magazines it's just like "all" other
mag's, don't belive everything they print.

"after a while you start to understand it's feedback"
^ Why do I have to learn to understand it's feedback? feedback _should_ be
simulated in steeringwheel (ForceFeedback), but
the feedback in gp3 is so terrible and unrealistic, works exactly opposite
like it works in a real car,
I don't get great feeling without working FF in wheel. I might as well take
joystick and "play a game"...I hoped
GP3 to be a simulator, but it seems that it's "just an arcade game".

You didn't ask for modern F1 sim?
WELL....that is really easy one.... Grand Prix Legends of course is the best
F1 sim ever made ;D

res textures?

Well I'm not totally convinced about that and even if I "love" GPL I must
admit that it's driving style (sliding around) isn't realistic IMHO.

Besides the FF there is the visual and audio feedback, which are more
important than the FF. Try for instance driving without sound, hard to do
and when you manage, no more speed. But anyone can drive without the FF.
The point is that you need more than some 5 minute spells to learn this sim.
I cannot imagine that you did any serious experimenting with setups in that
time, which is essential to learn drive and appreciate any racing sim.

I can run practice at 1280 perfectly with just the mirror textures switched
off. Slowdown in race is caused by other cars when appearing up close and
from the side. This causes a dramatic performance hit (PO 150-70%) on all
resolutions except 640x480 with any NVidia drivers. What settings do you use
Chris?

Well Eldred, even to load and try some setups from the net and drive them
one would need more than some 5 minute spells. I agree that you can enjoy
racing without understanding the setups. But a little experimenting with
setup parameters and trying to feel the difference will greatly increase
one's understanding of car behaviour i.m.o. And driving only the default
setups will not reveal the depths of GP3.

also followed the instructions in the readme file and used low res textures
by changing the cards.txt file.
