I had my doubts as soon as they announced Renny Harlin would be the
director. He helmed the execrable "Pirate Island" or whatever it was
called - the pirate movie starring his (then) wife, Geena Davis, as well as
a previous Sly movie: "Cliffhanger." That was the one, you may recall, where
the villain spent the whole film shooting his own gang whilst the
professional climbers jumped from crag to crag (about as realistic a
portrayal of climbing as CART cars on the freeway is of racing).
Will probably go see it anyway, though.
Daniel
BTW: I would say there have only been three good racing movies ever made:
"Grand Prix," "Winning" (Paul Newman), and "Le Mans" (Steve McQueen). Maybe
not "good" films all of them, but good racing movies. Interestingly, all
were produced in a short period in the late sixties, early seventies - that
golden age when the cars were advanced enough to be fast but before advanced
aerodynamics and mega-buck sponshorship wrecked the racing.

Mockery of Stallone's CART movie Driven
A TV trailer for Sylvester Stallone's CART film, later titled Driven, drew mostly derisive reactions, especially to scenes of Champ cars racing on public streets. Francois Menard said he had read draft scripts and watched filming in Montreal, and described the plot as poor. The thread became banter about Stallone's acting career.

Yeah Francois....
I'd have to agree... looks lame.
I also particularly liked how they took Michael Andretti's
barrel-roll-of-fun from Mid Ohio and digitally redid the paint scheme to
become a blue-and-white car. Gee, that's going to fool CART fans.
This thing is going to stink like a pile of my dog's finest :-)

The script for the movie is so bad it makes Days of Thunder look like
Casablanca. Seriously, it's as poor as Death Race 2000 (ok maybe not *as*
bad since that's a cult film hehe). Spoiler somehow (stop reading here if
you do not want to know), the ending of the movie has good-guy Stallone
chasing bad-guy German driver around the interstates both in CART cars,
Stallone wearing no helmet. They were going at around 50km/h so they will
be cranking the shots and using MTV-style camera editing to have the cars
appear faster. So those who think this will be as good as "Grand Prix" will
be very disappointed.
Jacques Villeneuve will appear as a cameo in the movie, while they have
filmed many race shots at the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit in Montreal. It was
very weird to see Champ cars going around that F1 track.

Hmm I sense some lack of faith here. I'm not sure but are you questioning
the truth in my words Bruce? I can send you proof :) . I wasn't employed
as a consultant FYI, but I've read portion of a draft script, and some of
another revision. And I was there when they shot at the Gilles Villeneuve
circuit (for some reasons I can't tell) and on a tunnel that goes under our
downtown city (unintentionally). It's still named Champs on the legal paper
I saw (went from "Champs" to "Driven" to "In this Air" and now back to
Champs). Stallone's first intention for the movie were actually quite good
as he wanted to do a biopic of Ayrton Senna but with the FIA struggle the
project went into the toilet, so they had a short time to revise the script
to Champs. It's now a pure "American driver takes over the world racing
against a bad German guy" movie, where Sly comes back from retirement to
train a young talent, but in the movie Sly is an unsuccessful driver
actually. Movie was shot on location in Montreal, Chicago, Toronto, Japan,
Rio, Detroit, Long Beach, and principally in Homestead.
I mean it bloody has Burt Reynolds in the movie as a team owner in a
wheelchair! <VBG> We can see the roots from the original F1 script, but
let's just say there ain't much resemblance between Frank Williams and Burt
R.
The main cinematographer loves to do MTV-style visual cues, he was secondary
unit director for Armageddon and The Rock, so the racing shots won't be
interesting. Ok so they will look fast and really exciting you can bet on
that, but expect tons of blurry 2 second shots of cars going at 40mph but
over-cranked to produce a wuzz effect. Shaking the camera at weird angles
with different lenses puts the viewer out of the focus of the different
layers in movie making, but you'll feel in control of the speed emotionally.
So is this a good or a bad thing? Both actually in terms of the racing part
of the movie, but the script won't be nominated at the Academy Awards for
sure ;-D
At least Sly is really trying to put some emotion in the movie and not
thrown in some crashes each 5 minutes.

Hmmmm....tastes differ, I guess! The scenes where Sly is driving a Champ
car on a public highway, running under tractor-trailers and followed by
a wake of exploding vehicles ... well, it seems just a little Arcade-ish
to me. Or does this happen a lot in real life?
Apparently they've finally settled on the name "Driven" for the film. If
I may say so, it looks as though they could have changed the final "n"
in "Driven" to "l" and been a LOT closer to the mark...

Stallone is one of few actors who have mastered the art of using the same
facial expression to portray so many different feelings.
He made people like Lord Olivier, Burton, Ralph Richardson, Guinnes etc, SO
envious; here they were, emoting their hearts out, really working at it, and
along comes this naturally gifted block of granite.

Personally, I was rather disappointed by how it looked. I wasn't
expecting anything as good as Grand Prix, but I was hoping for
something less Day's of Thunderish. I mean, Champ cars on city
streets? Come on. I'm not expecting anything of substance from this
movie any more. Just the standard hollywood tripe.

No...it was simply a basic one-two.....a flippant observation (fingers in

combination as old as comedy itself.

Some would even suggest, as you did earlier, that there is very little
resemblance between Stallone and an actor.....
Personally I've always thought he did good as a comedian, Rocky 1-5 was
hilarious, as was Rambo 1 and 2, Cobra wasn't half bad either, but the
one where he had Estelle Getty as his mother, "something
something......or my mom will shoot".....naa, wasn't all that funny

Rocky was not a comedy. His best movie and acting is and will always be in
the original Rocky. Let's remember that unlike the other sequels, Rocky 1
was a very serious movie that was praised by both the critique and the
public. It won 3 Academy awards for Best Director, Best *picture* and Best
film editing. Stallone was also nominated for best Actor, and let's not
remember that he wrote himself the screenplay! I doubt you can say a bad
acting job when your nominated for best actor at the Oscars ;)
The original Rocky is a marvellous movie, probably one of the best B-film
about sports ever did.
