Re: GPL is shit.... and here's why

Troll post calls GPL bad for time-poor players

A poster argued that GPL was only for people with unlimited free time and recommended Lego Racers instead. Most replies mocked or rebutted him, noting that many working adults played GPL and that tools like training mode and the SVG Editor eased learning. Eric Cote cited a survey showing the average GPL player was in his thirties, and a few conceded the learning curve was steep.

What you say is quite true. But indeed to make a SIM you have to make it like the real thing as much as possible. Do you think that Clark, Hill and the rest were only doing this "a few hours every week" ? On the other hand I can fully understand you and direct you to the "easy" and "fun" sims such as -RALLYE MASTERS -RALLYE CHAMPIONSHIP 2000 -GP3 I think you will get a lot of very agressive replies to your post and I am sorry for that.

Well, ok maybe mroe than ust a "few" hours but in some cases I'd imaginevery little was done between races as was stated in the GPL manual. "Teams often arrived at an event witht he cars setup for the previous event" or something to that extent. Also after seing teh 1967 Dutch GPon Sky Sport Wheelbas club a few weeks back I didn't see Clark, Hill and co, having to brake before the damn s/f line or using all of these weird driving techniques we see in the GPL hotlaps. They were driving pretty standardly, ok, they obviously had less grip and larger braking distances but I get the feeling that GPL isn't so realisitc as it is exaggereated. I mean think ofit like this... if sim makers can't get the exact feel of a modern car right with access to one with telemetry how in the hell could Papy's sim born out of myths and peoples impressions of the time be so accurate? Made me think anyway. > On the other hand I can fully understand you and direct you to the "easy" > and "fun" sims such as > > -RALLYE MASTERS > -RALLYE CHAMPIONSHIP 2000 > -GP3 fun, yes..easy? If that's what you think fair enough, just don't play it. No need to go slagging it off. Look, I can understand why this post is getting so many negative responses, but Mr. DarDANe][ does have a point hidden in there. I would agree that if you can't find the time to practise a sim, then avoid trying it (and criticising it). However, I have personally found the sim a bit frustrating in the degree to which mistakes are punished. Sure, you can run the trainers, etc., but it's not the same. If something like Sports Car GT had the physics model of GPL, it would be really great (yeah, bring on WSC!). With Sports Car GT, mistakes generally cost time, but the game doesn't seem bent on throwing you into the barriers at every opportunity. I love GPL, but it IS something of a love-hate relationship. I often find it difficult to relax a bit and enjoy the game for what it is (although it definitely becomes more enjoyable with practice and skill). Obviously, if the game were any easier it would not be a true sim of the '67 season, but an ideal sim to suit my lifestyle and time would have a slightly less defined threshold separating "on the track" from "in the barrier". Great, you can have a bit of help when learning now but for many offline racers (and I know alot!!) along with a newbie, this sim is over the top, the basic sim provides no entertainment value to someone learning or just wanting fun. To be honest even after learning to drive I still find it a dose to drive. It's the good online racing that keeps me going with it.

I felt exactly this way about GPL until some months ago. I would have long given it up if it wasn't for some great online leagues. But somehow it got to me, I go faster at every track I try without much effort, and I can stay on the track a lot easier. It even happened that I kept on driving in practise because of a good dice with the AI, even though there is no chance for a good lap that way... Before I would have crashed with the AI around in no time, now I can race really close with them and stay on. I really don't know what made the difference, it appears to have been some quantum leap in ability. Though some help may have come from practising the tracks in Training mode, where before I used Single Race. Gone was the frustration hitting an armco or a fence, just back to the track and drive on, instead of starting from the pits again or shift R for cold tires and a full tank. Must add that I went back to single race now that I stay on the track much better. I can only hope it stayes with me now :) Bart Westra

Let me remind you , one year ago I did a survey about who's in GPL, the average was 33 years old, since we're one year later, then it's 34... That's far from the kids in summer holiday isn't it ?? Most of them works too, since to get proper hardware for GPL, you definitly need some money in spare.... If you can't control your car in GPL, it's not the sim's fault, it's the person who look like you in the mirror... So don't tell us GPL is shit... very bad excuse indeed. Let me remind you some people are talented, others not. For instance Greger Huttu being one of the fastest around (if not the fastest) plays very little GPL per week in practice. He just got that gift , and exploited it. If you are not talented enough in one certain thing , don't say it's shit. It's you who are shit, as simple as that. What are you gonna teach your children in life ? Don't touch this it's shit... don't try to surpass yourself and find your limit ? Is this how you'll do it ? A game needs reality, but also PLAYABILITY and that's something GPL does not have, but its quite a good sim, like GP2 and GP3... Dont make this a religion, just play more and talk less! Regards!

Get a grip! -It would never get released. One does need immersion, suspension of disbelief to make the experience worthwhile. By getting a game "as close as it can get", there is less chance of the illusion being shattered by an idiosyncrasy. E.g. when I shortcut a chicane and the car survives the excursion I expect to get away with it or serve a stop and go penalty, not a black flag icon hanging in mid air and "the hand of Crammond" holding me down for a period of time. > A game needs reality, but also PLAYABILITY and that's > something GPL does not have, but its quite a good sim, > like GP2 and GP3... GP2 and GP3 simulate what it would be like if everyone could drive an F1 car, and technically they are not even in the same league. Playability is an issue with GPL, granted, but once you get to grips with the cars and the tracks, it just keeps on giving. > Dont make this a religion, just play more and talk less! Oh, the cult of GPL is well established, nothing you can do to change that now. ;-) Jan./ CART!! =---

GPL has playability every other sim/racing-game can only dream of. > A game needs reality, but also PLAYABILITY and that's something > GPL does not have, but its quite a good sim, like GP2 and GP3...
