Re: GPL - the "SHIT" debate continues

78 posts by 25 people · 27 Sep 2000 - 04 Oct 2000 04:51 UTC

Flame warContinuing row over claim that GPL is too time-consuming

The poster behind 'GPL is shit' clarified that he thought GPL was the best sim but only usable with lots of free time. Regulars replied that a few hours a week was enough and pointed to driving aids and the AITweak utility, while ex-Codemasters employee Damian Wilson joined in calling r.a.s. 'gaming fascists' and preferring GP3 as a game. The exchange descended into insults and troll accusations.

In the "GPL is shit post" I did say that GPL is the best sim which it quite clearly is in a pure physics way etc.. etc.. lets not wear the topic out etc... I wouldn't dispute that (i never played a driving game that got even vaguely close) but I was making the point that the game is only any use if you have a lot of time put in especially in single player mode as there is no difficulty level (which is a major omission....however shit or amazing I am).I am also obviously at a loss as to how people find the time to put in (esp. when some spend a fair bit of time on this NG as well). If you dont have the time then the occasional go at GPL is immensely frustrating.. is it not. Something like GP3.. whilst highly inferior in more ways than just plain physics, can actually be a very useful and enjoyable game. Some of you posted some healthy comments and agreed with me and also joined in for a bit of fun and went some way in explaining how they manage to put in the time - thanx for that - (bmwisme, Graeme nash, Ryan Mitchley etc..). but some of you got defensive tried to make the funky replies, play the tough-guy and very ingeniously deduce that I must be shit !!! what the **** is all that about ? We still swapping conkers here or what.... Ace, Eric Cote etc... So what's your GPL times ??? If I'm shit then let me try match your laps then maybe that'll make you shit as well......... -- DarDANe][ Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

What can we say? GPL is made for a niche market. If it doesn't suit you nor you have the time to correctly spend time with it, then it's just not made for you and it will be frustrating. Just like a real racecar would be frustrating for you if you spent a small amount of time with it! GPL made no concessions, that's all. Only a few hours a week over six months is enough to get you to the point where you get more reward than frustration from GPL. Don't assume every GPL fan plays the game ten or twenty hours a week because it's just not the case. I've never played GPL as much as I have been doing recently, and that's still only about 3 hours a week on average. Also bare in mind that GPL is difficult to appreciate without the right hardware. It needs to be running at the full 36 fps for you to be able to react in time, and it needs an anologue control device, preferably with force-feedback. I wouldn't dispute that (i never played a driving game > that got even vaguely close) You don't seriously think everyone here is still playing GPL two years on just because of the hype about the realism do you? If it wasn't also a top game and enormous fun everyone would have long since gotten bored of it. Personally I don't really care whether it's accurate to the real sport or not. If I found out tomorrow that the cars were way too slidey (which they may well be for all I know) it wouldn't stop me playing and enjoying it. The reason it's so great in my opinion is that the learning curve doesn't just stop after 50 hours play, like with most racing games. The learning curve in GPL just goes on and on more or less forever. The reason for this of course, is the superb physics, as you said yourself. Remember 'realistic physics models' and 'accuracy' are not the same thing. Again though, if you don't like it and aren't going to play it, fair enough, but why the need to slag it off? Enjoy playing GP3 and let the people who enjoy GPL continue to enjoy it. Live and let live.

Well, excuse us, this is rec.autos.simulators. I do not spot the word "arcade racing game" in there, do you? > I wonder how many of them have actually ever driven anything > remotely fast? I wonder how many can actually drive? Don't be fooled, I am an exception to the rule here, having only done some autocrossing when I was younger and didn't have a clue about what racing was about. Most RAS regulars are accomplished real life racers. In view of the average age of simracers and most being located in "western civilisations", I think it's safe to say a very large percentage of them know how to drive as well. > As we both know, we can drive, we do so very quickly This is what it's about, isn't it? -The real life racer looking down upon the simracer. Well, f-you!! -The cars may be virtual, but the emotions are real, which, for me, is the fascination of the whole thing. > and we both think GP3 is more fun than GPL. Interesting, I've read many similar comments from real life racers, while to me the car in GP3 feels as dead as a Dodo. Maybe Crammond got something in there only real racers can pick up on, which would make the game even more exclusive than GPL. > 'Nuff said. Having to bring someone from another newsgroup in to agree with you says a lot about your argument. <g> IMO you chose to make enemies, deliberately so. If you have such a passing interest in racing sims that you cannot bring yourself to spend the time to arquire the skills required for the more challenging ones, why post at all here? Did you really expect knowing how to race a real car would translate to driving a sim? -Just like the reverse situation, it's not going to happen. Boy, what a great idea SoS1937 was...what a crime it wasn't done by a real company. Like those other schmucks who were gonna do a mid-60s TransAm sim and came up with Dukes of Halfass instead. With all the tracks that have been done for GPL, it's too bad somebody couldn't model some pre-war Mercs, Auto-Unions, Bugattis, and Alfas...

Thanks for spotting the spelling mistake. Hadn't realised it was two R's. To work at "Codies" you have to know something about games. I'm sure that blah blah blah Laboratory covers a much wider range of subject matter, and not just how to build nuclear weapons. In all honesty, though, I didn't work there long and it was a mistake to mention them. As it happens I've only driven an F1 motor once. It's well worth doing though (do they do similar things with CART or IRL motors I wonder? That would be interesting....) but at a grand a time a tad on the expensive side. Driving it made me realise a few things, most importantly that PC simulators are pretty good but nothing can prepare you for the assault on the senses the real thing gives you. Putting my foot down (progressively I might add!) in third gear coming out of a chicane was just unbelievable. And I still have memories of my eyes popping out of my head going round the first (180 deg 1/3 mile constant radius) corner. If you've got the money, do it now. I'm not a Lotus expert. I only drive one. Damian Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

The messages this twat has pulled are from alt.cars.lotus where I was having a pleasant discussion with a fellow Elise driver. It wasn't flame. Now, I hate to continue this, but I never once said I didn't like GPL. I love it. I just think that GP3 is a better *game*. OK? Happy? GOOD. NOW F**K OFF. Damian. I've said more than once in this NG, if there is to be a GPL2 (we can hope can't we?) then it should be set in 1937 or there abouts. I'm totally in love with that period of Grand Prix Racing, and it is crying out for someone to do it justice in a decent (i.e. GPL quality) sim. Why don't they make a game that does racing stone-age style - you know, like the Flintstones. I'm really tired of seeing all these new-fangled things called automobiles.
