Can someone give me some comparisons on these two types driving games.
I have just completed GT2. This game blew me away. Never had so much fun.
Great value. Tons of playing time. Loved the first GT also.
Now, I am looking for a new challenge. Will the GP3 and GPL games stand up
to the console games. Do they feel as "real" as GT2 does?
I used to be a big Indy Car Game fan several years back. Now with a new
High H.P. computer, looking for the latest and greatest.
Thanks for any opinions.
Chris
My first driving game was the original GT and I still love it, but GPL is in
a whole 'nuther world. It is by far the best sim I have ever encountered.
Be warned, though. Learning to drive GPL is like learning to play a musical
instrument or a skillful sport. It takes some time and commitment to reach
a level where you can truly enjoy it, and until you reach that point it can
be frustrating

and GT2, IMO (could I throw a few more acronyms in? <G>).

Before you buy.
Gran tourismo 2 is the greatest racing game I have ever played, when it comes
to its overall apeal, nothing else really comes close. SCGT for the PC with all
of the downloadable tracks, cars, and add ons is probably the closest thing to
GT2 on the PC. GP3 and GPL have somewhat more sophisticated and demanding
physics models, but not as far from GT2's excellent physics model as some
PC-centric gamers will try to convince you. GPL is very tough to play at first,
mostly because the cars it is modeling are ultralite 450 HP rockets with no
downforce and relatively poor tires by todays racing standards.
Gpl gets to be fun after awhile as you get the hang of it, but it lacks the
variety of having 500 cars and numerous mods at your disposal.
GT2 is kind of a racing RPG by comparison. GP3 is a modern f1 sim with easier
to drive cars than GPL, downforce wide slicks and all well modelled, but rather
different from GT2, which is about racing street cars and modifed streetcars
mainly. Both GPL and GP3 are great fun , but not nearly as fun for me as GT2.
If you liked
GT2 then you may find SCGT and Viper Racing on the PC to be more to your
liking.

Didn't he ask for a comparison between Gran Tourismo 2 and GP3?

No.

Wow, what a topic!

Do you mean Indy Car Racing (Papyrus' title)? If so, you know what to expect
from a title such as GP3. But just asking out of the blue for a comparison to
GT2 leaves me guessing as to what you really mean or expect.

I bought a PSX just for GT, then also got GT2. So, as some you'll find here,
I would have been asking the reverse of your Q (ie, is it worth getting a PSC,
or DC, for *their* racing titles). BTW, I think GT and GT2 are terrific.
Nothing quite like them on the PC (which is why I got the PSX).

More real. Physics at least as realistic, many will say a lot moreso (won't
get into a war over it, but most race sim fans will be happy with any of
these). The racing AI is far, far superior to GT2's. Race against more
opponents, on real tracks, with higher res graphics. Basically, they are
superior to GT2 in all ways, EXCEPT, the number and type of cars offered. Oh,
no Rob Zombie alas :-)
If I were you, I would not get GPL. Not unless you are willing to spend 100's
of hrs to get competent (then again, you did say you "completed" GT2, so maybe
you have that perseverance). Playing GPL is an act of commitment. For the
record, I'm in a commitment stage :-)
Games I'd recommend:
NFS: Porsche Unleased. Closer to the console titles in game style. Decent
physics, a fair number of cars, fake tracks, a few racing opponents,
console-like gameplay, and a lot of fun.
Nascar Heat or Nascar 3. If you are into Nascar.
F1-2000 or GP3 (depending on CPU, F12K needs about the best).
There are also some motorcycle titles, SBK2000 (is 2001 out?) come to mind.
Incredible graphics, but tough to drive them bikes.
All of the latter titles are based on racing on real tracks, against tough
opponents, with realistic physics, good-to-excellent graphics. They are far
better with a good controller (a good joystick, plus I'd recommend
adding pedals, then perhaps a decent steering wheel). They are not based on
console-like unlock tracks/cars/upgrades gameplay.
Generally, for a *simmer*, they are far superior to what consoles have to
offer (the DC's F355 Challenge perhaps an exception). As entertainment,
that's less clear. If only they made a GT2-like title...
It's hard to judge these games against each other, since I only ever played
Gran Turismo on a digital pad (although I did complete every league), and it
was the original and not GT2, but if you are after that same 'feel' that the
GT games have, you will find it in Grand Prix Legends and not in GP3. GP3
doesn't have that 'dynamic' feel that GT has, partly because modern F1 cars
have rock hard suspension, but also I'm not convinced the physics are as
good as they could have been.
If you need modern F1, then despite it's flaws, F1 2000 has a better 'feel'
than GP3, but I highly recommend getting Grand Prix Legends. It has physics
to surpass the GT games, plus damage, great graphics, fabulous sound and a
learning curve that goes on forever. You can feel the body roll and the
tyres squeal when you throw the cars about, just like GT. It's definitely
the game you are looking for.
