CGW editor responds to criticism of its racing coverage

Users criticised Computer Gaming World's glowing Grand Prix 3 review and suspected magazines of trading favourable reviews for exclusives. CGW executive editor Jeff Green joined to clarify that the Inside Racing columnist Tom Price had not been dropped and invited feedback by email. A GamesDomain reviewer denied publisher pressure, and Dave Henrie posted a mock editorial applying for a job.

Well I'll start positive, they dumped the inside racing guy, and they did a preview of N4. I haven't read the N4 preview because I don't want to bash that much... So on to the GP3 review. Before I get negative, they did spell the Crammond right this month... Ok here is a quote that blows me away... "The Top Drawer physics, painstakingly recreated tracks and flawlessly modeled cars provide an unrivals sense of intensity and realism. This is the only serious racing sim you need on your hard drive right now." OK, is there anyone here that thinks it's THAT good? Is it's physics unrivaled? Even if you don't think GPL is all it's cracked up to be, it at least rivals it, not to mention, NH, N3, F12000, MGPRS2, GP2... Not to mention it wouldn't be the only sim you need, if your interested in, oval racing, semi-trick racing, dirt track racing or Reno air racing. So when this guy says flawless physics, dos he really mean it? Apparently so... "<B>A Perfect simulation of F1 racing in nearly every way </B>" Ok, now this guy needs to get a grip, even the staunch supporters of GPL wouldn't call it a perfect simulation of 1967 racing. And I don't think there are a lot of people here that thinks any of the current sims out there is a perfect representation. And if you're still thinking he doesn't really mean it... "Cars accelerate, decelerate, and corner almost exactly as they should." I for one wish they would stop sending me these free issues... btw. doesn't the framing of the pictures look a lot like the older PC Gamer design, without the little yellow box?

I love how he says they handle just as they should. I am sure he has driven an F1 car on the limit and really knows what he is talking about. I doubt that was the case - it certainly wasn't here at GamesDomain, when I did my GP3 piece. It's unheard of for a publisher to lean on us to make us write favourable reviews. Most of us (myself included) are freelance writers so even if they did, we really wouldn't give a rats arse anyway. There was a time when Empire kicked up a big stink about what we wrote about Ford Racing, but as far as I'm concerned, they had that coming anyway. ;-) But generally publishers don't try to butt in, and I sure hope it stays that way. I thought most reviews did a good job of nailing it down actually. I haven't seen the CGW review (what's the link?), but both Digital Sports (Randy McGruder) and High Gear (Stefan Petrovic) both covered it very well. Rehan

Nice to see you keep tabs here, Jeff. Love your column. However, I too share the sentiment here that CGW has gone downhill, at least when it comes to sim reviews. Guess that's what happens when Denny Atkin leaves (and I'll throw in a plug for one of our netizens, Robin Kim). What happened to Gordon Goble? He did auto sim reviews that I could respect.

What I'm having a go at is primarily the UK Games magazines, and PC Gamer in particular, who are so far up Crammond's bottom it must be painful They still gush praise over GP3 and seem to ignore the glaring problems with it. I knew someone who used to work for a (now defunct) publishing/promotion company, and, according to him, it was not unknown for "deals" to occur between reviewers and publishers. I honestly hope that it isn't the case, but I'm maybe too old and cynical these days. -- -Ace- (GPLRank -4.46) Rehan Ali <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bJOA5.2093$[email hidden]... > > I'm betting there was a BIG kickback from Hasbro to all the mags to > > ensure good publicity, and it stinks. They (PC Gamer), sold the review for the exclusive, IMO. Which, according to a local mag, is more or less standard practise (which they supposedly do not succumb to). It goes like this, publishing company XYZ agrees to an exclusive and buys x-amount of ad-space in the magazine if they do a 4 page preview and a favourable multipage review.... sounds familiar, doesn't it? Jan./ who used to buy PC Gamer every month. =--- Ace wrote... > What I'm having a go at is primarily the UK Games magazines, > and PC Gamer in particular, <snip>

Ya know, back in the old days ("the good old days" for some of you) I was the sports editor and talked to Gordon all the time and assigned him stories. Unfortunately, I haven't had much contact w/him since they changed my responsibilities. So offhand (I'm writing this from home) I don't know why he's not writing more for us these days. But I agree---he totally knew his stuff and was a good writer besides...
Ok Jeff, I'm up to the challenge. I think jussssst about everyone here will vouch for my voyer...errr my journalistic talents. But in-case you need some samples to show the namby-pamby publishers, I've included a sample editorial below... The Current State of Sim Racing: or why am I stuck in the Pits? The real world of racing is vast(WE NEED A NEW CART SIM!) and varied, we have so many different kinds of racing to sample that few of us can claim to be experts in more than just a couple of the many different types of motorsports. However in the computer Genre(thats a French word that means "Americans are Fat") that "simulates" racing, we have only a few categories available to us. Sim racers can choose mainly between three types of racing simulators. 1: Formula One based sims that supposedly attempt to simulate the cutting edge of today's most technically advanced form of racing. However(WE NEED A NEW CART SIM!), while Formula One IS state of the art, both of the newest computer F1 simulations are based on software engines that are at least two years old.{GP3 is rehashed GP2 & F1 2000 is an update of SCGT} 2: The second form of computer sim racing is Nascar. There are three major companies producing yearly titles based on(WE NEED A NEW CART SIM!) the Nascar racing circut. While Formula One is the most popular form of racing in countries other than the United States, it can't compete with the local popularity of Nascar in America. Each night thousands of people around the world hook up to the internet to race their Fords and Chevys and Pontiacs against each other in vicious multi-player action. 5:[three sir!] Right! 3: The third avenue available to computer sim racers are the arcade based 'driving' sims. These are often well done and should not be(WE NEED A NEW CART SIM!) considered childs play...even though a good game-pad is all one needs to compete. While many of the elite Sim Racers look down upon the "Test Drives" and "Need for Speeds," these types of arcade racers have a large Nintendo-grown following. Thats it! 3 basic categories....and that is the problem with today's sim-racing market. We need more variety. We need more than just Nascar, More than just Formula One. We need(WE NEED A NEW CART SIM!) better products. Anyone can slap a moving road on your computer screen but how many programs can truly be considered Great? How many racing sims are there where the positives of the title outweigh the negatives? Purists may be alarmed that I did not even ONCE mention Grand Prix Legends(GPL) but that will change in the comming months. As Computer Gaming World becomes the 'Voice of the Sim Racer' we will expand our coverage of all things concerning Sim(WE NEED A NEW CART SIM!) Racing. We will help you get the right equipment, we will help you choose from the upcomming titles, and we will convince you that a real, true, sim-racer always drives in the cockpit, not some flying-behind-the-car tailgunner view. Next month, we'll examine the equipment that EVERY sim-racer needs. dave(WE NEED A NEW CART SIM!) henrie "Jeff Green" <[email hidden]> > I'll go one better: you guys (or some of you guys, anyway) say you didn't > like Tom Price's Inside Racing column.
