My philosophy.... never upgrade always perform a clean (Windows) install. I had no problem with Windows ME and it installed better than any previous version of Windows. Not as well as BeOS or QNX though. No probs here with a clean install, except my internal pci modem wouldn't work at all. A USB modem soon fixed that. steve
My internal modem would not work, I get port open etc. Tried 3 different modems, no good with any. The internal went from connection speed of 46000bps on 98se to 31500bps on ME. On a fresh install would not work at all. Seems strange!! The system is running ok now with a fresh install. but the modem will not work, runs ok on my other pc with 98se. Video drivers were a problem as well. but I may have that under control. Same here. It took me 3 days to get running after going from 3.1 to W95, a day from W95 to W98, but ME worked fine the first time after a 45-minute installation. It did overwrite a few things, but nothing which actually affected the running of the OS and it's remarkably more stable than W98.
