I get like 26fps at the start of a full-field race in 1280x1024 with 3DFX
driver in GPL, but only about 5fps in any resolution with the D3D driver
chosen, which seems absurdly low. What are other people getting with the
D3D driver on voodoo cards?
This is with a K7-700 + Voodoo3 +128meg + latest voodoo5 drivers.

Not that I know for sure, but pre-Voodoo 5 cards doesn't exactly like being
run in DirectX mode - stick with Glide.
BTW, is running V5 drivers on a V3 card a GoodThing?
:-)

15-18 fps in D3D, if I remember correctly from when I had a V3. Take a look
at the ReadmeD3D.txt file in your GPL directory. The recommended settings
for a V3 are-
[ Int Profile Values ]
value3 = Direct3D7:D3DDevice:0
value4 = Direct3D7:TossHighestMip:0
value5 = Direct3D7:TrilinearFiltering:0
value6 = Direct3D7:DoubleMirrorResWidth:0
value7 = Direct3D7:DoubleMirrorResHeight:0
value8 = Direct3D7:DirectMirrorRendering:0
value9 = Direct3D7:DisableZBuffer:0
[ Direct3D7 ]
D3DDevice = 0
TossHighestMip = 0
TrilinearFiltering = 1
DoubleMirrorResWidth = 1
DoubleMirrorResHeight = 1
DirectMirrorRendering = 1
DisableZBuffer = 0
which go in your core.ini, and make sure your core.ini is called "core.ini"
and not "core.ini.sample". You should really be running Glide though on a
V3.

But why use D3D with a 3dfx card in the first place?

The GPL Scrapyard is temporarily down(ish). We'll be back soon!

Don't use D3D on a voodoo, glide looks and works better on a voodoo IMHO.

The
d3d patch has the better looking mirrors. I'm thinking....He used the
opengl version by mistake. Open gl in the cockpits came to a crawl,
especially with non-3dfx cards.
so first advice...make sure your DX is updated to v7.0a(that could be
'just' 7.0 now, I think I saw somebody post that)
update your 3dfx drivers, since the V5's release, the 3dfx group has
released new drivers for both the v5 and v3. Then dig through the readme in
the d3d patch and MAKE sure you follow the advice contain there. good luck

Its not quite as simple as that, it depends on how your system is set-up
I think. I have a Voodoo3 2000 (clocked at 165Mhz) on an Asus A7V m/b
with an Athlon 650 Duron (clocked at 900) 128Mb pc133 sdram and win98se
and it optimised for games.
I have virtually no difference in fps on my system using both the Glide
and D3D settings in GPL, (they both max out at 36fps) with most graphics
options on and using 1000 x 800 res.
I have also used the glide and D3D settings on my second pc (Abit BX6
m/b with Celeron 300 (clocked at 450) & 128Mb pc100 sdram and win95vb,
and with reduced graphics, got 36fps with glide, and only very slightly
less using D3D (2 or 3 fps less max)
8-)

Try it with all graphics on @ >1024x768 and you will see the difference.
It will probably still max out with glide but surely not with D3D.
