Go to this site and check under sounds for a static fix.

Hmm... I am using a MX300 and GPL sounds fine. I don't think that it
is the sound card.

I've got a Turtle Beach Quadzilla, and I get the exact same thing in GP3 and
Nascar Heat. Also, in Quake3, I get it if I'm not using A3D. If I use A3D,
it sounds fantastic.
Hmmmmmm....it's not just me afterall
Dont know if this will help but...I have the original Monster sound
and I have to turn down Accelleration level to minimum or GPL sounds
terrible and broken up.
Hope this helps

Been there before, done that, didn't work.
Puzzled as GPL is the only game that does this.
What's interesting is I can hear the cracklies in some
of the files played separately. I'm listening just now to
a stereo ferrari wave and it has hi pitched cracklies
no matter which heapdhones or speakers I use. So I'm
wondering, is it the way the card is processing,
or it it there and I'm just more sensitive to hearing
such distortion?
Regarding the anti-static file, the way I understand
GPLS sound files to work, unless there was an actual
portion of the sound data file dedicated to static,
it would not look for a "static.wav" in the directory.

Oh well, at least I have company.
I wish GPL used A3D. Positioning would be too cool.
Would you listen to some of the replacement sounds
as separate files and tell me if you hear the crackling?
gpl was coded long before the A3d standard came out. It "would" be neat.
someone, say a person who work at Vortex Industries could possibly write a
patch that enables A3d sound in Gpl....<wink wink> <nudge nudge>

Hmmm.... searching for such a setting... In my A3D control I have a box
to check for "Disable Direct Sound Hardware Acceleration". Don't think I
want to check that. Then under A3D Settings there are sliders for
optimization quality vs performance, but that is actually a setting for
"Reverb Engine / EAX Support". I will keep poking. Thanks for the idea.
Try to experiment with the hardware-acceleration of your sound-device,
to be found somewhere in it's properties.
