*Please* don't do this, and especially don't upload any laps done in this
way to GPLRank - it ain't on.
Yes, it's very hard to start with, but then what aspect of GPL isn't? It's
vital you learn good habits from the start - and cutting the corners is
definitely not a good habit.

Why GPL lap times show XXX at the Nurburgring
A new driver asked why most of his Nurburgring laps were not timed. Others explained that cutting corners past checkpoints invalidated laps, and Morgan Wooten suggested deleting checkpoint lines in track.ini while learning, which others opposed as a bad habit, especially for GPLRank submissions. Track guides and patience were recommended.
Automated summary.
I've just started driving at the Ring and I'm finding half my laps not being
counted by the timer. I don't just mean my out-laps, but the others too. I
did five laps in a row and only one was counted. The rest were marked XXX.
This also happened a couple of times to me at Mexico.
Any ideas?
Derek.

You probably went on a shortcut over the grass at some turn. The marshalls
at Ring are very strict... :-)

Open up your GPL/tracks/nurburg/track.ini file and delete the four
lines that start with "checkpoint_x". If you cut those four corners
whether deliberately or accidentally your time won't be counted. Very
frustrating for newbies just trying to learn the thing. Be sure to
back up the file first before editing it.

Stay on the pavement. No cutting corners.

What a pity! Is it really so easy to fool the GPL? And you can do that
with every track? Perhaps I should come back to trying to better my
lousy times in the GPL Rank - after deleting all the "checkpoint_x"s?

PS I will definitely NOT edit them off!
Thanks for your help guys :)
I just wanted to know what the problem was. With all the graphics mods I've
been adding recently, I thought I might have stuffed something up.
I've only done eight laps there and I haven't managed a clean lap yet, which
is probably the reason for my disqualified times. I don't cut corners, but
I've spun off at least once on every lap so far :o
I left the Ring until last because I thought it would be difficult to learn
and the experience I got from learning the other tracks would prepare me for
it. Thankfully I was right but only in the way that learning to throw a
frisbee would prepare you for an Olympic discus throwing competition :o
Adding together my best times for all the other tracks gives me a handicap
of +7.4 seconds, so I think my driving is ok, but learning this awesome
track is going to be HARD! I'm spending most of the lap getting my Ferrari
all crossed up over the hill-crests, wondering which way the next corner is
going to turn. (a bit like Colin McRae if Nicky Grist went out for a coffee
break in the middle of a rally :)
Is there a good track map around that I could print out for navigation
purposes?
Thanks,
Derek.

counted, the XXX's are deffinately caused by cutting corners. There are
several corners which are quite easy to miss where you can go straight
across the grass and end up (if your lucky enough) back on the track.

I never said it was cheating. I just think it encourages bad habits - like
railriding. You can get around Monaco a lot more easily if you railride,
but it's going to make things a lot harder for you later on, as you
effectively have to learn the track again, as you do if you use driver
aids.
I accept that other people may have different points of view, that are
equally valid - all I'm saying is that I think I personally would have
taken a lot longer to get reasonable Ring times without it. I think
Ringtrainer is the most useful device of all, as that hugely reduces the
outlap time.

You can tell the disqualification corners by looking for the red markers
with a black X around the course.

If you go off of the track at any point and have to use "Shift-R" to restart the
car the lap time will not be counted and will be recorded by the "XXX" that you

I do not think this is true! I have got laptimes also after "Shift-R"'s,
but not after driving over "short cuts" on the grass...

I've never seen these black X's anywhere. Where are they located?

Dave, I'm not advocating cheating, I'm telling the dude that to avoid
the frustration of accidentally screwing up a corner and having that
lap not count because of it he should go ahead and do that (we're
talking about 9 to 11 minute newbie laps!). After he's gotten to the
point of being able to stay on the track constistantly then restore
the lines.

On the grass at the ring. I assume that's their purpose.

It isn't hard, it just takes more time, and putting in the laps is the only way
Derek. It speeds the learning process if you can force yourself to slow down
and focus on anticipating what's coming up, rather than trying to go fast and
have all your attention used up trying to stay on the road. I usually use the
F10 view for a dozen or so laps when learning a new track. Devote an hour or
two to this and you'll be driving the Ring in your sleep.
The penalty corners at the Ring are:Nordkehre II, Hatzenbach II, Hocheichen,
and Adenauer Forst. Learn where they are and SLOW DOWN on the approach.

So THAT's what they are! I'd been wondering why they're putting traffic
signs on a race track... :)

Force yourself to drive at touring pace for a few laps. Soon you'll start to
recognize sections where there's no need to stay slow (like straights :-))
and you can speed up a bit in these places. A map is no substitute for time
in the car. Until you done a whole bunch of laps, inevitebly, you'll
struggle. Drive the circuit until you can't stand to look at it again. Then
drive it some more. Remember, take it slow. I'd advise you not to any aids
like Ringtrainer just yet, you need to drive the circuit as much as
possible; until you know it as well as you know the other tracks. Hey,
no-one said it was easy :-)

You're right. I guess some people would deliberately cut corners and
not think twice about it. I never did it. Hell, the tracks are hard
enough to drive on as it is, let alone the grass! I chunked those lines
when I was learning 'cause I kept screwing up one corner. I didn't
necessarily cut it, but rather would forget how sharp it was and spin
off into the grass. Then I'd just get back onto the track and drive.
The game considered it corner cutting and wouldn't show me my laptimes
so I found the lines that were causing that and deleted them. I'd still
recommend that Derek do that if he just can't get his cornering right,
but obviously I wouldn't recommend screwing these corners deliberately.
