Well damn, I thought everybody here would have been impressed hehe.
I have Nascar Heat on a Geforce 2 GTS and I think it looks cartoonish in
comparison.
Yeah the GT3 images have jaggies, but what struck me was the amazing
amount of detail that makes everything look very realistic (like the
headlights on the ferrari...wow).
TVs do have very low resolution compared to computer monitors, but I
don't think too many people would complain if a game looked like real
footage they watch on tv. And a lower res allows more detail with the
same computing power.
Anyway, what really matters in the end is the physics and gameplay. :)
First screenshots of Gran Turismo 3 on PS2
Screenshots of Gran Turismo 3 for the PlayStation 2 impressed some users, while others pointed to jaggies and said NASCAR Heat on a GeForce2 looked as good. Radical Entertainment's Joe McGinn said the PS2 could do antialiased 640x480 without flicker. The lack of an in-car view and of damage, said to be due to manufacturer licensing, were criticised.
Automated summary.
Maybe it's just me, but other than the reflections, it doesn't look any
better than Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed which came out for the PC,
what, a year ago???

Absolutely incredible!
Yep they look good, now how do you run this in a console that has about 50%
of the hardware required to display this ?
On top of this don't forget that TV have a SHIT resolution and a lot of
"flicker" and so on...
But anyway it looks good, let's wait for WSC to get an idea whether it is
possible or not.

Nascar Heat (although

today, don't have to wait until 2001.

I'm not a console player, so, how do you take a screen shot with a PS2
anyway?

oh...lol. I thought it was some weird kinda ferrari. Damn the Elise for
being in sacred ferrari red! :)
Gran tourismo 3 is awesome looking. As far as jaggies are concerned in still
shots, I have some downloaded Nascar Heat screenshots that look awful compared
to what the game looks like when it is actually running on my computer.Motion
seems to make jaggies less obvious than in still images, and on those lo rez tv
screens the jaggies are even less visible. Also, as far as complaints about lo
rez tv images, I would prefer a game that looked like an actual live feed from
an actual race to a 1600X1200 32bit image of any currently available PC game.
Also, 75 million polys per second easily eclipses the latest Geforce 2 ultras,
and even with all effects turned on it is reported that the PS2 will do 13
million polys per second.

there's no such thing as an "in car" view. Granted, the movies look VERY
cool, and it may be worth purchasing the platform and game for the eye
candy alone, but (to me), it's the in-car view that makes or breaks a
game. It's what really makes it feel like DRIVING.
I can't find a single dashboard shot -- the closest I've seen (including
the "first person" movies out there) are shots with a speedo/tach
overlayed on the track. I call this perspective "low flight," as that's
what it feels like, more than driving -- it's like flying just above the
surface of the track.
For that reason alone, I'll always choose a program (even one that's a
little less visually stunning) that offers a real in-car view.
Am I just wrong, and there haven't been any published dashboard shots but
the view does exist? I didn't play enough GT2 to remember if there was an
in-car view, but I don't think there was...
Just my $0.02 ... I'm sticking to GPL and Nascar Heat for now :-).

Gotta agree with that one! In fact, except for the groovy sky stuff and
the reflections, it looks no better than GT2 -- which is pretty good,
don't get me wrong, but with the specs PSX2 is touting, you'd think it
would be a LOT more eye-boggling. And what's with the street cars on
mostly generic circuits? Granted, the title is Japanese-market, and some
of the cars -- like the Mitsu 2000 Evo -- are pretty hot stuff, but does
the home-market in Japan REALLY go nuts for whanging street tiddlers
around NoNamo Ring? I saw a little peek of a Nissan RE390 LeMans car,
but where are the mind-numbing whackomobiles, fer pity's sake?

Amazing is right! Does it look this good from "in the car"?

The PS2 has that much power (and more, when developers get to 2nd and
3rd-gen titles).

640x480, anti-aliased, no flicker whatsoever.

isn't the jaggies a result of current hardware's inabilty to capture stills

It is the biggest difference between console and PC, on the console world
the programmers have to work because they cannot say "we will program this
like shit and the clients will buy the new PENTIUM 4 at 2Ghz anyway...
But regarding the screenshits I still think that you need a lot of ram and
video ram to produce such images and I am not sure that the PS2 has that,
not to mention the bandwith of the bus to display such images at 25fps
minimum.

> This is like the Madden or 989 football games they show on TV. They NEVER
show gameplay shots only replays, which often are run at a different
resolution. The two in car shots(lovely dash btw) are decidedly less
quality than the exterior shots. The PS2 "can" do AA but the developer has
to add a few more steps to acheive it...many of the first Japanese titles on
the PS2 looked worse than similar titles on Sega's Dreamcast, because the DC
can do AA in a hardware mode...the PS2 must acheive it with software, kinda
like the Nvidia Geforces.
They are good looking, they are an improvement, but if you put up that GT3
shot onto a 19 computer monitor...blech! :)

Hey, I was impressed :)
Gran Turismo certainly had excellent physics, and top gameplay, so GT3 could
be the first game worth getting a PS2 for. Agree about the Heat visuals as
well.

ACK! I think Nascar Heat has these same diseases. Can we get a medic in

There was certainly no in-car view in GT2. Certainly it would have
looked appalling on the PS1, but there's no excuse not to have it on the
PS2. Apart from the cost of modelling 200+ 3D dashboards that is.

Yeah the "throw the car going at 120mph into a corner and magically let the
tyres slow down the car without using your brakes" racing of GT1 and GT2.
