Australian TV delays the Japanese GP broadcast
Australian fans complained that the Japanese Grand Prix would be shown late at night in favour of a movie. Others argued F1 had become boring, which explained poor TV slots, while some insisted the topic did not belong on r.a.s. US viewers confirmed Speedvision would show the race live.

Yep, both you and Tor are right IMHO... F1 is just plain boring these days.
It has come to the point where the single overtaking manuever that happens
in a normal race has to be name "the best passing ever bla. bla."
Yet for some reason I spend every race sitting faithfully, glaring at the TV
hoping against my better judgement that something will happen... Get rid of
the wings, and let the driver duke it out instead of the engineers.

An Australian website has been setup to put some pressure on channel nine so
they can hopefully start to show GP's live and at decent times with good
quality coverage. This website has also sent letters off to Channel nine,
Channel TEN and Bernie Ecclestone. There is also a petition on this site

But the thread had *nothing* to do with "the boredom of F1 in the 21st
century". The original poster was complaining about Australian TV coverage
of his beloved sport. He was not asking whether F1 is boring or not. Why did
you have to spoil the thread? Start your own F1 thread and complain about it
there. Here, we're talking about Australian TV coverage of F1. Read the
subject header.

Ah but it does. If F1 was more entertaining it would have broader appeal
and would thus be able to compete with mainstream TV. This isn't an Aussy
issue, the US GP wasn't shown live in the UK on mainstream TV (at 6pm)
because it simply doesn't draw enough audience to justify disrupting prime
time schedules.

And you know what the sad part is? I just checked to see what's on Sunday
afternoon at 3pm and it's,
wait for it, THE NEVER ENDING STORY PART 2!
I guess they couldn't handle the competition the V8 Supercars on channel 10
were going to give them
Australian TV is all screwed up, putting it nicely

Discuss the cars, the driving techniques, perhaps even the drivers if sim AI
ever develops some "I", but I think we don't need to discuss the television
coverage of F1 races in Australia, at least until someone releases an "F1
Television Broadcast Sim"

Ah, but "broader appeal" and "more entertaining" does not necessarily have
anything to do with how boring or exciting it is, or whether the networks
will show it live or not. As an example, Mahler's 9th symphony is a sublime
work of art but most people find it incredibly boring. Or, most people find
bungee jumping the thrill of their lives, but I don't see them showing the
bungee jumping championships during prime time. When a guy complains about
TV coverage of his beloved sport, why piss on his parade by saying that it's
"boring"? Firstly, that's a relative statement of opinion, and secondly,
it's rude.

Sort of like, ummm, let's say........ discussing the various idiosyncracies
of the F-18 would have no place in, say, a newsgroup devoted to military
flight simulations?
Is that what you mean by "no place"?

I assumed "boring" was shorthand for a much more complex explanation. But
I can see your point.
Andrew McP
What really concerns me is not so much that the race is shown late but that
we do not get to see the qualifying. This to me is probably the best part of
the weekend and is when the drivers really show how good they are.
Discussing the plane itself would be relevant to that ng, but discussing the
merits of the TV coverage an air show at which the F-18 has appeared in is
OT

Fair enough, I s'pose. Although to me the reaction is a bit severe as the
subject line is prefaced with "OT" and we all know not to read it if it
isn't of interest. Also, it (the subject) will be dead and buried within a
day or so of it appearing.

The "I can get my shopping car sideways thanks to GPL" and follow up posts
