I've been into motorcycles since I was a kid. Kenny Roberts reigned
when I was a young motorcycle fanatic. I wasn't anywhere near old
enough for streetbikes, but I loved all bike racing and he was the
king of road racing.
Motorcycling wasn't on TV much, and all the info I got was through
articles in Cycle World. One day, my buddy (who also idolized him) and
I caught some road racing on Wide World of Sports, and there was King
Kenny! In a couple of sentences, two young boys realized their hero
was a gold plated, Grade A asshole. I never liked him again after
seeing and hearing him taped rather than in text.
Bob Hannah. Now there was a guy that could be an a-hole in a humorous
and likeable way. :-)

Slot, you've got to get yourself to a bike race next year. I too had not
been in years, but I made the Laguna and Willow Springs Superbike races this
year, and was treated to the best display of pure road racing I've seen in
years. I've heard a lot of moaning recently that there are no young American
racers out there, well...someone's not looking far enough, because they are
there and kicking some serious butt. I'd sure like to see someone put the
Hayden brothers into an Atlantic or Lights team.

Yeah Kenny! Boy isn't his dad a "stick in the mud"? No emotion at all.
At least Dale Earnhardt Sr gets excited when Jr wins. And those were
just races, not the Championship!

Great to see. Schumacher might not be the fairest driver in the world, but
I'm soooooo glad to see Ferrari finally win again. I was 3 months old when
Jody won there last one.. :-)
And KR Jnr. deserved it.. worthy champion.. best this year.. watch out for
Valentino next year tho.. and don't discount Garry too...

I don't follow bike racing anymore and was happier before I read this post.
Thanks gents ;)
Maybe tonight I'll sit on the rocking chair with a blanket on my lap and
watch old Bonanza re-runs.

Why? -I think a large percentage of RAS'ers are disenchanted with F1.
Furthermore, the DWC was as good as sealed after the US GP (which got ample
coverage here), so why discuss it at any great lenght now. We're happy for
Ferrari and that's that.
> Funny how this is the FIRST GP500 posting I've ever seen here also...
Well, that could have something to do with a) last year's championship being
rather boring and b) it being won by a Spaniard. This year, not only did it
nearly go to the wire but an American won and, for the first time in the
history of the WC, father and son have both won 500cc World Championships.
Obviously, you couldn't know this had actually occurred, but you could have
guessed that, if it went that way, it would be commented on. Especially
since some leading figures in simracing are (ex-) bike racers.
My take on spoilers in general is, while it's common courtesy to provide the
tag, if one really doesn't want a result spoiled one shouldn't take anything
for granted and refrain from browsing motorsport related material until one
knows the result in the right way.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you don't have a genuine beef, but
complaining about a header 48hours after the fact is a little over the top,
IMO. To me it seems you weren't really passionate about watching the
Championship decider in the first place. Even if I wasn't in a position to
watch the races live, I wouldn't want to wait 48hrs or more for a re-run to
know the result.

I taped the race and I wanted to watch it with my family on Christmas

True, it was a rather blatant, but it has happened before (omitted spoilers)
and it will happen again. Like I said, don't take things like that for
granted. If you really don't want to know, avoid motorsport related
newsgroups/websites.

Note the use of the word "nearly", Randy.

Probably because there one gets torched on the spot for forgetting a spoiler
notation?

The race was run at 2pm EST on Saturday (if I'm juggling my time zones
correctly). Like I said, in a simlar situation I wouldn't be prepared to
wait until Sunday night to know the result, getting the latest news from:
http://www.suzuki-racing.com/
or
http://www.quokka.com/
instead.

Well, not meaning to sound callous, but if you guys celebrated thanksgiving
on the same day as the Americans, both the FIM MotoGP and the FIA F1 season
would be over. ;-)

Nope, we have opinions on everthing... don't come here before watching that
Stanley Cup final tape either. <g>

Well, you wouldn't have had me to deal with.

Exactly, I never claimed the 500cc was a done deal before the round at
Brazil you got that mixed up with my F1 comment. Having watched the race, I
can tell you "the minimum" didn't come easy to Kenny.
> My complaint was hardly "over the top".
Not in execution, granted, I've seen worse. Timing could have been better,
IMO. Your message is listed here as being posted Monday, October 9th at 5pm
EST. Flying off the handle at seeing the result of an event that's over
48hrs old, is, IMO, a little over the top.

Hardly "to the wire", what with there still being the Japan race...

And if you were "passionate" about bike racing, you'd know the championship
was far from decided. KR could have chunked a tire, been out by a
backmarker, etc. Then the championship's not over by a long shot. VR did his
job, but KR did the minimum to win the WC.
My complaint was hardly "over the top".

Then you are both wrong - from a common sense point of view the
championship *was* a done deal after Valencia. KRJR needed to
accumulate a meager 10 points in the three (Rio, Motegi, and how
on Earth could you forget - Phillip Island?!?) remaining races whilst
Valentino Rossi needed to win every last one of them.
Gary McCoy is the only rider to have won back to back races this
season with his victory at Valencia. This ended the 22 race streak
in which no rider could pull off consecutive wins. In light of this
and knowing that Roberts could win the title by scoring two 13ths
and a 12th I can hardly see the outcome of the riders championship
being in doubt.
