I'm in the market for a new computer, and thinking about indulging and getting a system that is ideal for gaming, ideally for racing sims. I am relatively new to gaming, so I'm uncertain of some things. I am considering the Dell Dimension XPS B 800r, because it has a 800mhz Pentium III, 128mb 400mhz RDRAM (again, is RDRAM the best kind of ram for gaming?), 64mb DDR GeForce Plus, Sound Blaster Live Value sound card, and HK-595 speakers. Nascar 4 is going to support D3D and OpenGL video acceleration. What is this refering to (I assume it is the video/graphics card), and which card offers these things? I am thinking about the GeForce2 GTS or the 64mb DDR GeForce. (Are these even graphics cards?) Nascar 3 supports A3D 2.0 and DirectSound3D. What is a good sound card that supports these things? What is SVGA? (I imagine it refers to monitors. Is there a better type of monitor for gaming?) What is VRAM (As compared to RDRAM, etc.) What is the best kind of RAM for gaming? What is a good speaker set up? Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Stutes.....sounds like a great system, you should have no probs whatsoever. The Geforce 2 GTS (or even Pro) if probably the best at the minute. Most modern video cards will support OpenGL and Direct 3d, they are APIs - simply a common set of graphics functions that all the video cards must support (in order to be compatible). Geforce 2 also has Translation(?) and Lighting support (T&L) which take the load away from the processor and onto the video card, leaving the CPU free to do more important things like physics / network / ai processing. If you have the money, go for it. Remember to get a nice big monitor 17-19" or even 21" if money if no object, it makes a great difference. Good Luck Ashley. When does N4 come out, next year ? Why not wait til the new vidcards come out early next year. And 800mhz seems slow now with 1ghz chips cheap as dirt and 1.5ghz chips coming soon. rms [email hidden]

800 Mhz slow? Approx. 70 different Intel cpus. None over 1Ghz. Nearly 40 AMD processors with just 3 crossing the 1Ghz barrier. 1.5 Ghz cpus soon. dont think so. Go to the tivoli and play while you wait. Knudse "Roger Squires" <[email hidden]> skrev i en meddelelse news:dP0F5.1581$[email hidden]...

Well I had in mind the P4 which I think debuts at 1.4ghz, but for something less pricey the Athlon-1.1ghz is out right now, with 1.3ghz overclocked systems for sale various places. As for the video card, ATI has already announced the Radeon2 for december release which they say is *twice as fast* as the Radeon, and 3dfx/nvidia will be following suit soon. Since Nascar4 is not shipping til Feb/March and WSC April or so, I still say this guy should wait before making a major hardware purchase. rms [email hidden]
