The Computer and Video Games Web site has posted 50 new PS2 screen
shots of Ubi Soft's F1 Racing Championship -- I was impressed early on,
then I realized there were a lot of shots showing arcade-type speed and
RPM displays from a chase view perspective, but no proper in-cockpit
shots. Screen shot number 30 took care of that, sort of, much to my
disappointment (it's sort of a "rollbar cam" view, if not a proper in-
car shot). There was one other in-cockpit shot which was equally
disappointing.
Go to the Operation Sports site for the link to the article and

At this point, judging by the lack of proper in-cockpit views, it looks
like F1RC may turn out to be an eye-candy fest that falls short in the
simulation category. Time will tell on the PC version, but at this
point, I'm not getting my hopes up.

The PC version is a little different, but not much. Please note 1) the
jaggies that will ultimely doom the PS2, 2) the low texture resolution but
complex polygon count and 3) that the game engine is still mostly the same.
It's not a complete rebuild, just an evolution. Also the game engine will
promote a much more grainy picture quality compared to the previous
versions, which isn't a bad thing necessarily.

However, taking a look at the article in question i'm not particularly
worried. These are *console* screenshots. Given the difference between the PC,
PSX & DC version of MGPRS, i'm not really concerned that there is any evidence
a pc version will be arcade only.

Lack of marketing intelligence. They annoy the market that wants the most
realism possible in their racing games. If that department doesn't care at
all about the "hardcore" simracers, then there is an increased possibility
that the developers act the same way. Rarely for the sake of $$ and
revenues you will see divergence in philosophy between the marketing and
development teams.

It is a BIG BIG warning. If you build a sim from the console first, you
get poor support for input devices(wheels), you get crummy menu's, you get a
tail gunner view or nose cam view that just doesn't give the feeling that
you are IN THE FEEKIN' CAR. Plus it means they most likely are NOT modeling
movement in the cockpit so another layer of imersion is lost...dang dang
dang..
Is this the new version Yves was talking about last spring? dang dang dang!

Because it could lead to a lack of cockpit views in the game.

Hey kids, it seems r.a.s. in once again is jumping to huge conclusions based
on nothing.
Console screenshots. No dasboards. Big deal.
F1RS and MRPRS2 had nice dashboards. This game seems to go into great detail
in a lot of areas. I doubt they would decide to leave this feature out. I'll
bet all my F1 sims that F1RC has dashboards.

Reminds me of the time a certain someone was sure that RC only had 45 degree
turns based on some early screenshots. :-P

But what the heck do you know about the development of F1RC? Look at my
first reply to the post, there is great hints on how the PC version will
different from the one you saw in the screenshot.

Very well restrained, David
ALL your F1 sims - you mean there is more than one? ;-)
Tony
Not attacking you but I thought that was a know fact.
If the game originates from a console, the PC port will be
a piece of crap.
I haven't seen any exceptions to that rule yet.

I agree with you 100%. I have yet to see a decent console port.
Any sim, and I say this with ZERO programing knowledge, should be built
from two main starting points...the tires and the cockpit. taking the
aproach used by ISI to throw in a 2d dash late in the beta process of scgt
just won't cut it anymore.

Also, F1 Championship 2000 has been released on PS and the PC version is
pretty good, unless they're seperate codes.
