What do people round these parts think of the
game "Driver" ported to the PC from the PSX by
GT Interactive?
I must admit, I bought it at full price, only to pretty
much give up on it instantly for two reasons, first,
the menus don't allow me to configure a LWFF
properly and second, I thought the game was
supposed to follow the Ryan O'Neil film, which
had bright red Trans Ams and stuff. You know -
a bit of glamour - but the game only has a rather
tedious generic american thing to drive.
In addition - the game seems impossible.(Before
you gloat, I'm happy with the level of competition
in GPL - but those Policemen are worse than
Surtees!)
Has anyone persevered with it? Does it get better?

This game IMO is MUCH! bette on the psx. I have completed the game on psx
and I think it was awesome. Except the last mission, that was impossible.
But on the PC I put in on the shelf after 2 days and it has laid there ever
since...

I finished the game a couple of times, and I had great fun doing so.
Some missions are really difficult, but all can be done with some
practice (and luck!).
The atmosphere in the game is great. Funky music, good graphics, well
designed mission. Only thing that really sucks is the story and the
in-game movies.
Be sure to download the latest patch! Quite a lot of problems have
been solved, including the LWFF button-assignment problem.

Which unfortunately doesn't support non-US versions, right?
Thanks Infogrames/GT Interactive

Before you buy.
The physics are kind of fun, but there is no in-car view which kills it
for me...

There is an in car view in Driver. It is slightly useless since as
soon as you bump into something, the hood gets buckled and you can't
see out. I have no clue where my manual is or I woiuld tell you which
button to press. I do recall being able to set the 'change camera'
button on the control assignment screen, though.

It'd be pretty poor if it didn't, wouldn't it?

I do not have the full game, only the demo, and in this demo you can choose
the car you want to drive. There is a file called Mission661.dms in which
you can change "PlayerCarType 0" by "PlayerCarType X" where X is a number
from 0 to 17 (with the exception of 15).
2 is a pick-up truck, 5 is a Olds Toronado (front wheel drive!), there is a
taxi, a police car, a Camaro, a T-Bird...
Maybe in the full game there exist some other files that allow "cheating"
this way... maybe every mission has a .dms file.
In the demo you can also select the weather, the "resistance" of the cops,
and you can be invulnerable.

any driving game that models a digital throttle via an analog input is
crap. at least that's what I think. shame, really, as it could have
been truly great.

I like it, tons of fun.
You get used to the police after a while.
I use the logi, you have to switch off split axis.

Damn. I've looked everywhere and can't findit.
There's a "Roof Cam" view, but can't find an in-car dash view...

this for quite a while. I always prefered the chase view so you could see
your car's antics.

I used the in-car the entire time. Once you become used to it, its great.
You can always watch the replays and who wouldn't on a great and exciting
run? Too bad there isn't going to be a PC version of Driver 2, I was looking
forward to it. :-(
