Let us know how you make out. Is this the Petty school? On Fri, 13 Oct 2000 02:04:57 GMT, "Sal V." <[email hidden]> wrote:

Well this coming sunday morning I will be straping in a Winston Cup car all by myself for 10 laps around Dover! The Monster Mile to which I have been attending races for over 10 years now. This time I'll be in the car doing the laps. I am so excited I can't sleep. I've been hanging out here in R.A.S. for as long as it's been here and figure you guys are about the only ones who can understand why I'm so excited. I know it will be much different than our Nascar sims but I still feel like I know the track better from running so many laps on the computer. I will post back here on sunday night to let anyone who might be interested know how I make out. I will be purchasing the video from my on-board camera as well as having my wife film from the grandstand. Wish me luck! Sal V.
Alright Sal, Let us know things like: Can you see the hood? Does the car pull left on the striaghts? What is the perephrial (spelling) vision like? Can/What do you hear? How far up the track do you look? I,m sure others can post more questions. Thanks Carl

Carl-- Here is what I experienced in a WC car (as well as on local short tracks) >Can you see the hood?I could, but I guess it would tend on how a driver likes to mount his seat. I could see up to the point the nose slopes down. >Does the car pull left on the striaghts?Yes, but I find it is easier to control than in NH. You can feel what the car is doing with your body, and can correct it. A sim just can't do this--yet. The first time I got in the car, this is what caught me off guard the most. Even pushing the car on/off the trailer, it wants to turn left. Now, I don't even notice it in a real car anymore, you get used to it. >What is the perephrial (spelling) vision like?Mine is limited by the helmet more than the car. Guys who drive with open face helmets probably have a better view, hopefully one will answer to this. The mirror does leave blind spots. On short tracks, I sometimes shoot a very quick glance over my left sholder as I exit the turns to see what is coming up behind me and how close they are. >Can/What do you hear? You can hear better than you can imagine. We don't have radios, so hearing cars close by helps. The WC guys have earpieces for their radios, and I imagine this impacts what they can hear. >How far up the track do you look?I look up as far as possible. The earlier you see trouble the more time you have to avoid it. Also, you can catch the caution lights coming on at the end of the straights if you look all the way down. Since we don't drive with radios, this early warning is crucial. Depends on the person I guess.

I took Skip Barber's 3 day racing school at Elkhart Lake a few weeks back. Driving a race car is so much easier than driving a sim. Hell of alot of fun, hell of alot of work. Back at home I took a few laps with GPL (CART Racing) at the same track and noticed.... the Road America track from CART Racing sucked (no elevation changes) and I couldn't put the car on the track where I wanted it. (btw, the track in Sega's CART game for the Dreamcast blows away Papy's version). If you're a sim fan, I'd recommend everyone take a driving course in the series of their choice. I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I'm sure you'll have a blast. You are right about placing the car. In sims the cars seem to want to take one line on the track and you can't really adjust mid corner. In real life racing, you can put the car wherever you want...sometimes at the expense of exit speed, but you can do it. That's the same experience I had(Laguna Seca). Much easier to drive the race car than the sim....
