Howdy folks,
I'm having intermittent problems with the graphics in GPL. I recently
upgraded my processor so that I now have the option of running 1024x768
resolution. Since doing that, however, I have begun to get lock-ups
and crashes to desktop. Curiously, it only happens when I'm driving
off-line. Never happened to me in an on-line race and I cannot narrow
it down to any specific thing happening (i.e. wheels interlocking, cars
tumbling, using a certain marque of car, etc.) to cause it. I did have
problems similar to this before, but it was caused by my V3 being
overclocked. I set it back to normal and the crashes stopped.
I'm using a V3-3000 AGP card, 3dfx in GPL and have the latest VooDoo
1.05(?) drivers. I've got mip-mapping disabled. I've got 3D wheels
installed for all the cars and I've got the GPLEA Lotus, Brabham and
Ferrari, as well as new dashes for the BRM and Eagle. I seem to get
the most crashes with the aftermarket tracks, Goodwood in particular
(which runs very slow even with the lo-res 3do files and lo-res
textures). Do the textures and object files at some of these add-on
tracks cause problems at certain resolutions? Could I be getting a
conflict with some of the other add-on graphics? I know for a fact
that one Murasama graphic add-on won't work with my card. Tracks won't
load when it's installed. Maybe I've got another, more subtle graphics
conflict. If I had to guess, I'd blame the 3D wheels. I'd hate to
stop running them, though. Makes GPL look so much better. Does anyone
know of any problems specifically pertaining to this? For now, running
800x600 or 920x690 (or whatever that intermediate resolution V3 cards
have is) seems to be working.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hmm. I'm no expert, but you *might* have permanently damaged your card.
You can do it by overheating CPUs, after all.

Possibly, but I'm doubting it. I recall reading at the time of others
who had overclocked their V3-3000 cards farther than I had and ran them
there all the time. My card ran well for six months after I put it
back to the stock settings.

Chris...
Several things can be causing your lock ups....especially with a V3 card and
GPL. What ram do you have and what cup....make a huge difference (faster is
better, more ram is better...minimum 128 mg....I run 384 mgs). Also, your
mother board BIOS settings need to be properly set.....several settings you
can "get away with" running N3 or other less "cpu intensive" games....but
not GPL. There are several sites that can give you the proper BIOS tweaks
for your brand of motherboard. Additionally, your V3 "Advanced Settings"
configuration not only will affect the V3 lockup frequency...but having them
set properly can substantially improve frame rate...and graphic quality.
Again, go to the 3dfx Interactive site Forums...where many links to 3dfx V-3
Tweaks and Settings links can be found.
Finally, you should probably be running your desktop in 16bit, High Color
rather than 32 bit....that can often be a problem with GPL locking up during
game play. And, I assume you have the GPL installation patched up with the
latest from Sierra/Papy (version 1.2 patch). And, if all this doesn't
help....trying installing the D3D Patch from Papyrus. I run that now (about
two weeks now) and it has given me a 20% increase in FPS....and better
graphic quality.
I'm sorry I can't give you all the URL's for these links and sites...I am
not at my home computer and don't have these on this friend's
computer....sorry.
Hope this helps you....I'm almost positive one or more of them will.
Regards,
Tom

Ditto. I had got the similer problem with Voodoo3.
Chris, before wast your money, try to 'clean (= completely)' re-install
GPL and test some races without addons, especially GPLEA cars.
I had doubted broking my Voodoo3 too., so re-perchase new Voodoo3,
but it just cleared the old card was not broken.
GPLEA guys look like making the cars with larger memory video cards
like Voodoo5 or GeForse, so Voodoo3's smaller memory cannot handle
them correctly, I think.
Good luck.

A shot in the dark here, but maybe your new CPU is generating more heat
inside the case and so your graphics card is still overheating at the
higher res. Have you tried removing the casing to see if it still
happens?

Remove ALL_STRESS before replying
No person's opinions can be said to be
more correct than another's, because each is
the sole judge of his or her own experience.

Had the same problem after installing a new CPU. It went away after 2 weeks
or so. I've seen this before. Apparently new CPU's need burn-in time too. So
give it some time and don't do anything drastic yet.
Good luck,
