I just finished viewing the Gilles Villeneuve clips, and you can now
count me as one of those who has been brought to tears watching these
videos. I remember watching a broadcast of the Long Beach Grand Prix on
ABC's Wide World of Sports many years ago, and seeing a Canadian driver
do things with a car that left me dumbfounded. I remember one scene as
though it happened yesterday...Villeneuve tries to overtake someone with
a late-breaking maneuver at the end of a long straight...locks up his
brakes and goes sliding onto the runoff area...smokes his tires going
back onto the track in reverse...then smokes the tires again going off in
hot pursuit of the guy he just tried to pass. That scene is what stirred
the racing passion inside of me! I became an F1 fan that day.
Seeing (for the first time) the crash that took his life made me cry.
He is my hero.
Gary
He was racing Keke Rosberg for 2nd place in that race (1982). The Ferrari
had much greater straight line speed due to it's turbo engine but was
totally hopeless going round corners. A couple of times Gilles came from
what seemed like at least 100 metres back at the start of the straight and
just blew past the DFV powered Williams, Keke would then re-pass in the
twisty section. Keke finally came out on top for good after GV had his spin
at the end of the straight. Gilles finished third only to be disqualified
for having a rear wing twice as wide as it should be!

metal they said it was two seperate wings. The FIA quite obviously didn't
see it that way.

I'm with you Gary! I've only known G. Villeneuve through videos of his
racing, but watching him drive with all out commitment is just awe
inspiring. Drivers like that do not come around very often and they
make permanent impressions on the racing world when they do. He was
amazing.
