Best NASCAR Winston Cup tracks to visit as a spectator

A UK sim racer planning a trip to the US asked which NASCAR tracks offered the best views. Recommendations included Bristol, Talladega, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dover, Michigan and Texas, along with advice to sit high, bring a scanner and catch a Busch race. He narrowed his choice to Bristol, Atlanta or Dover.

Automated summary.

If you are coming from overseas, why not stay awhile -- find some place where there is a good short track (with racing every Friday or Saturday night) and go there a couple of times...as well as to one expensive Winston Cup race (which is usually on Sunday). A friend just went to the last(?) race of the season at Thompson in Connecticut (5/8 mile, high banked "paperclip" track with long straights). There were ~300 race cars there in different classes. Iirc, some classes had so many cars that there were qualifying races to determine who would get to the finals. Or, look for somewhere that has a dirt oval. Modern dirt cars are incredible -- the best show is probably when the "Outlaws" are in town (they travel from track to track), but any dirt track race seen for the first time will be a mind bender. These local "bullrings" are really the grass roots of American-style oval racing. -- Doug Douglas Milliken <[email hidden]> Milliken Research Associates Inc. On Wed, 18 Oct 2000 [email hidden] wrote:

From Michigan Speedway's website: http://www.michiganspeedway.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- BROOKLYN, Mich. Performance Racing News confirmed what motorsports fans have been saying for years: Michigan Speedway is the place to see a NASCAR Winston Cup Series race. In its May 2000 issue, Performance Racing News ranked Michigan Speedways two-mile oval as the worlds top facility to view a NASCAR Winston Cup event. The monthly magazine touts itself as "North Americas Motorsport Authority Since 1989." Performance Racing News said of Michigan Speedway: "The 18-degree bankings combined with the exceptional track width produce lots of close side-by-side racing. High-speed multi-car racing is the norm here." The magazine ranked Michigan Speedway ahead of runner-up Bristol Motor Speedway, third-place Talladega Superspeedway, fourth-place Darlington Raceway and fifth-place Lowes Motor Speedway. ------------------------------------------------------------------- I've never been there, only to Lowe's. I'll be at Atlanta in November, hope its a great facility too. Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

I would say go with Talladega. I was just at the Winston 500. I've been going to the fall race there for 4 years now. I've been fortunate to have perfect weather all 4 years. The setting is beautiful and the racing action is top notch. I sit towards the enterance to pit road in row 29 and can see basically the whole track.

Bristol ROCKS. Pretty hard to get tickets from what I hear though. The seats way up are pretty high and there won't be any empty seats if you're thinking of relocating. If you can get seats about midway up I think Bristol would be the absolute best. Mine were a little high, but it was still a blast. I have never been to real NASCAR WC race myself, though I have been a fan all my life, so I can't tell you which tracks would be best, but you have a standing invite to stay at my house for a bit, Colin. Much racing would be done, much music would be made and much ale would be consumed. ~daxe

For excellent viewing you'll probably want to choose a high banked oval in order to better see all the action around the track. You'll also want to get tickets that are at least row 7 or higher (row 7 may be too low, others can confirm/deny). For Superspeedways, Daytona and Charlotte are excellent venues. Don't forget a pair of binoculars to better see the action on the other side of the track. Both are excellent spectator tracks and have the most to offer outside and around the track before and after the race. Dover is an excellent spectator track if you prefer a mile oval over the superspeedways. You'll see more of the action closer to you. And of course, as others have pointed out, Bristol is the mecca of high banked short track ovals. For Bristol and Dover, bring ear plugs! I would say, for an excellent Nascar experience any of the above 4 tracks would suffice. Hope this helps. Dave Ericson "MomoBoy" JDB Racing [email hidden] wrote:

Well, I'm partial to Texas, since it's the only race I've been to. We sat between turn four and the first dogleg, about six rows up from the catch fencing last spring and were still able to see the entire track. The parking lot, on the other hand, was a nightmare. I'm beginning to wonder if "Bruton Smith" is an old Indian word for "big scary mudhole". Theron Houston [email hidden] wrote in message <8sk7v7$nkl$[email hidden]>...

Colin, I went to both races at Michigan this year and both were great. Sit up high just about anywhere to see the whole track, but the closer you get to the front "straight" the better for viewing the pit action. Wayne <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8sk7v7$nkl$[email hidden]...

I disagree about the plate race, though as you said, it is a personal choice. I agree whole-heartedly about going to the Busch race. I happened to catch one at Talladega because we got in town a day earlier than expected so decided to try to catch the Busch series. They were as much fun to watch as the big boys on that day.
Just to say thanks to all who replied....I'm a bit nearer a decision now (thankfully, no one said Darlington <g>) and I'll try Bristol first, then Atlanta. Really appreciate it, lads!!!! Colin (Bomber) Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Thasnk you all so very much for your thoughts - we're down to Bristol, Atlanta and Dover, I think. Now, Daxe has offered beer, music and ale (no hookers, though...) can anyone beat that, or is it Dover here we come???? <g> Seriously, I see Bristol is selling tix already for the WC race in March. The Bristol Night Race is *IMPOSSIBLE* to get tickets to "Please note: No single-event August Winston Cup tickets have been available for three years, and due to the event's popularity, we do not anticipate another offering of single-event tickets to the August Winston Cup night race." - From Bristol's site. Is an awesome race though! You'd have to buy a package deal to get tickets for it though... But the day race sells single event tickets.

Well, Loudon is only 4 hours away from where I live, so that's a good choice. Watkins Glen is the same distance, but you can't see as much (for obvious reasons). [email hidden] wrote:

'Dega is fun if you wanted to see a large pack of cars that run together for 500 miles. Been there once in about row 18, two sections before the start/finish line. Keep in mind that Talladege is *BIG* so you'll want to get high up. We could only see the cars on the backstretch occasionally when they could be seen between the mobile homes parked in the infield. Been to Texas about 4 times. Good viewing in most places except low in near the corners. The banking is so steep that you can't see the cars. Again, I was in row 18 but that is as high as you can get in the "cheap seats". I would suggest taking hearing protection to any race. The sound is pretty loud. Also, by having them with you at least you can put them on if you want to or leave them off if you want the full effect. Another recommendation is to buy/rent a scanner. It's fun to hear the pit crew and spotters talking with the drivers.

I bought the ticket 3 weeks before the race from a ticket broker, for about 3X face value. It was just before the end of the pit area about 10 rows down from the top. Great seat, you could see the cars all the way round and a lot of the pit action (a must, IMHO). If you're spending the bucks to do this I'd look for a weekend with a Busch race on Saturday and do the whole weekend. I'd also consider the ticket broker route to get a good seat (pit straight, up high). Personally, I wouldn't go to a restrictor plate race (Daytona, Talledega).
