At the start of races the screen seems to stutter and also the hard drive
seems to be accessed. Anyone else have this problem ? Any cures ? I have
64mb athlon 650 geforce ddr.
Turn off "real shadows" in the graphics set up.

From what you've described, it sounds like you're frame rate is
receiving a hit. The start of races is the most common place for this
sort of thing to happen, as all the other bikes are crammed into one
tight area of the screen, which puts a strain on your processor and
graphics card.
To help increase your frame rates, reduce some of the detail levels in
the options menu. Reduce them one by one though, testing out each
change, so that you'll know just how far you need to reduce the
textures in order the run the race smoothly.
You'll soon find the perfect balance between smooth visuals and smooth
gameplay.
