Favourite cars of all time

Group members listed their favourite road and race cars, with the AC Cobra, Ferrari 250 GTO, Cobra Daytona Coupe, Ferrari Dino, Porsche 911 RS and Chaparrals appearing often. Side discussions corrected history about the Cobra and Daytona Coupe and joked about the worst cars ever made.

I'm with Ed White. Give me the AC Cobra. Groundshaking, firebreathing, vicious, raw. A purebread, balls to the wall, take no prisoners, no quarter no mercy, damn the torpedos kind of car. It was made to be driven on the edge, sidepipes spouting white noise and tires pouring blue smoke from under sensual yet animalistic fender flares... pure and simple. Mike Mike

Well, this is a lot better attitude than that guy who says NASCAR Heat has to be put away at the end of the season. How about: Porsche 917 Matra 670 Ferrari 512 Ford P683L (lousy but beautiful) Porsche 908/3

For me, the AC Cobra would be the only car I'd need.........The Grille opening, the two seats, the side pipes, the shorty roll bar, the V8 GROWWLLL, the big, fat tires filling up flared wheel wells, wide stripes over the top, oh,oh,oh,OH,OH,OHHHHHHHH......errmmmm, excuse me. -- Ed White [email hidden] "Kieran Larkin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8t7gpq$h9l$[email hidden]... > Ok it is a simple question which is your favourite car ever, mine would have > to be the Ferrari 250 GTO or the mclaren F1, also one for the Ferrari fans, > which do you prefer the 360 or the 355? > actually how bout top 5 cars ever?? > > Remember I did say it was very off topic so if you don't want to answer > don't. > -- > Kieran > www.pcracing.co.uk for GP3 and WSC > >

The McLaren F1 roadcar is probably the most beautiful car ever built, but my favourites would be older sports cars like the Ferrari Dino 206 SP, Ferrari 330 GTO, Jaguar D-Type 1955. There's probably plenty of other vintage sports car which match up to these though. A game racing McLaren F1's would be pretty dull compared to racing Jag D-Types, IMHO :) "Kieran Larkin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8t7gpq$h9l$[email hidden]... > Ok it is a simple question which is your favourite car ever, mine wouldhave > to be the Ferrari 250 GTO or the mclaren F1, also one for the Ferrarifans,

"Kieran Larkin" <[email hidden]> wrote > Ok it is a simple question which is your favourite car ever My favourite car ever has to be the Jaguar E-Type. Quite simply the most beautiful car ever made. Honourable mentions to the Dodge Viper ( a brute of a car with no subtlety whatsoever but guaranteed to make people look at you), the Aston Martin DB5 (James Bond's car, say no more) and the Ferrari 360 (the most beautiful Ferrari I have seen in the flesh). My favourite car I have owned has to be my first one, a 1972 chrome bumper MGB Roadster. It started off in British Racing Green but was then rebuilt and put back to its' original Teal Blue. A completely impractical car but I used it everyday for 3 years, with the roof down at every possible opportunity. I was so sad to have to sell it when I could no longer afford the insurance. If I ever win the lottery, I would track the car down and buy it back for whatever the owner wanted. Gotta be a Ferrari ... I can't remember the model no., but it was a GT car from thwe 60s, there were very few made of which none have survived. 2. Mini. Small, fast, dominated motorsport, and drives like something undescribable and unjustifyable. 3. TVR Tuscan (the racing one) with that lovely 4.2, 650bhp, and fibreglass shell ... fast & V8 4. Audi GT car of the 80s. Reportedly 1100bhp from the 2.2 turbo engine. 5. Ford RS200, just because it was the fastest production car in the UK, and it had 680bhp in standard trim (special edition) from just 1800cc. Limiting it to cars which I've driven, it would have to be the 1973 Porsche 911 RS (lightweight). Nasty, quick, tempermental, but a blast. If I can choose from any car, then the Lambourghini Miura. It has the swoopiness of the Dino, which Bruce is so enamoured with (an who could blame him?) but a certain muscle that appeals to me. I wore out three Matchbox (substitute regional Corgi or Dinky trade name) versions of the Miura in my childhood. All the modern stuff like the Mac F1, the Porsche Turbo and the Ferrari 550 are technologically wonderful, with performance that defies description, but to me they lack the soul of the Ferraris, Lambourghinis and Porsches of the 60's, because the older cars still had a direct link to the man whose name was on their engine covers. My favorite car hass to be the Penske-Ilmor/Mercedes that Roger Penske ran in CART during the 1994 season. That car just ran completely through Indianapolis and definitely had a 1-2 finish if Emerson Fittipaldi wasn't trying to hard to put Al Unser, Jr. (his teammate and eventual winner) a lap down. That car caused so much hoopla that year! Betcha ol' Tony George was scared as hell of what Roger would come up with next...hence the IndyCar Retirement League... If it's sunny, the Chaparral 2A, if it looks like rain, the Chaparral 2F, if I'm in an open wheel mood, my trusty Ferrari 312, if it's Saturday night, the white Corvette...I forget which year, but it had the center post down the middle of the rear window. Ferrari 246 Dino GTS. I would sell my worthless soul to own one of those, if just for a month. I drove one in 1974 for a weekend (cost me an arm and a leg to rent it) after falling for the car ever since it was first displayed at Geneva. I've lusted after one ever since but they keep getting further out of reach as the values increase. (Best time to buy one here was 1989 - 1991 but I never had the funds). Now around AUS$130,000 and the successor, the V8-powered Dino, can be had for around $40,000! -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- Kieran Larkin <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8t7gpq$h9l$[email hidden]...
The Cobra was trying to look like a 250 GT? You mean the Daytona Coupe, I assume, because the AC Ace, which was the base for the 289 Cobra (which then led to the 427 monster), went into production in 1953 and the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta in 1959. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- Greg Beron <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > >which do you prefer the 360 or the 355?>actually how bout top 5 cars ever?? > > > The 355. One of the prettiest cars ever made by a British concern was the AC Aceca coupe. Absolutely perfect proportions.....and a delight to drive. I've had my eyes on one here in Canberra that's been garaged for the past 14 years but the owner won't sell it. Neither will he do anything else with it.....it just sits under a dusty cloth and it's so bloody frustrating! :-( -- BK. --------------------------- Bruce Kennewell <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:39f7cb11$[email hidden]... > The Cobra was trying to look like a 250 GT? > You mean the Daytona Coupe, I assume, because the AC Ace, which was the base > for the 289 Cobra (which then led to the 427 monster), went into production > in 1953 and the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta in 1959. > > -- > Regards, > Bruce Kennewell, > Canberra, Australia. > ---------------------------

In my driving career, I have owned two ford escorts (both with tiny engines) and currently have a Mazda 323F (which I really like) --- but it means I love this kind of question.... 1.. AC Cobra - Apparently, if you live in the UK, you can thank this car for the introduction of the spped limits. It was clocked on the M1 doing 180 mph when there were no speed limits. The speed limits were introduced shortly afterwards in response 2. Lambourghini Countach - No one's mentioned this one yet - which I find surprising. Some think its ugly, but I think the tension in the shape was amazing, plus the 5000S was released when I was in my teens - and it had something like eight carbs! feeding Twelve cylinders. It was like Thor's hammer. 3. Lancia Stratos - It had the Ferrari Dino's engine, but much looks, especially in the shots I've seen without all the rally gear. 4.. Ferrari Daytona Spider - Why, oh why don't Ferraris look like this today? A recent picture of the new 550 Spider makes you realise the difference. 5. Porsche 911 Turbo - about 1980's vintage - in black. Well, there you go, thanks for listening - now back down to earth <<< Bump!>>> -- Ouch! > Ferrari 250 SWB GT - the car the Cobra was trying to look like... but > they tried a little too hard Pete Brock was (is!) many things, but he was never a copycat designer -- his stillborn Samurai and Longhorn street car projects are ample evidence of that. The Cobra coupe was basically built to adequately cover the AC chassis, Ford 289, the FIA's spare tire requirement, and Ken Miles' lofty noggin. Brock -- like many others of the time -- was also a firm believer in Dr. Kamm's theories of airflow management, thus the truncated tail. If the Daytona resembled any Ferrari, it would have been the 250GTO Berlinetta, with its long hood, fastback windshield swooping into a nearly flat ducktail, faired headlights, and big side vents, not the much more conventional-looking SWB -- but IMHO, the Daytona is a singular car with a look uniquely its own. I saw four of them lined up flank to flank at Monterey, and not one of them was quite the same as another -- little differences in the front valance, headlight positioning and fairing, vents, wheel arch shaping. They all *sound* fabulous...

Hey....don't knock the Goggomobile, mate! The Goggo "Dart" version was a fine piece of *Australian-designed* sporting machinery, I'll have you know. Now, if you want to include a third choice, drop the Goggo and include the wonderful (yes, Oz-designed) Lightburn Zeta. Lightburn? Well heres my top 5 plus a few others that fit into caragories. 1. Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe (it only beats the 250 GTO because im a yank). But this IMHO is the most beautifully designed car ever. 2. Ferrari 250 GTO- Obviously second since it was given mention in first :) 3. Porsche 906/6- Just always liked this car. Better than the 908...better than the 917...the lines wer just so smooth and round...I just loved it. 4. Ferrari P4- Same reason as the 906/6. Wonderfully designed. A real eye catcher. 5. Dodge Viper GTS- Gotta be my favortie current car. Its got the Cobra Daytona Coupe concept of design but much more modern looking. Now on to some others. F1 car- Eagle-Weslake T1G or the Ferrari 312T (the 76 model). IndyCar- Watson Roadster...im a sucker for the old days Street Car- Aside from the Viper...a 1970 Karmann Ghia. But im biased cause i own one :) Honerable mention goes to several cars. The 1972 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 (my favorite road going Porsche), the Ferrari 512 Testarossa (the one from Miami Vice...pearl white), and of course the Jaguar D-Type. Chris

Little story here...Back in my misspent youth, I used to make periodic visits to Hollywood Sports Cars here in LA. One day while driving by, the new Daytona convertible caught my eye and I stopped by to check it out. While in the store, some rock star type walked in, plunked down $14,000.00 in cash on the counter, pointed to a yellow Dino parked against the wall and said to the salesman, "I want one of those, in gold. How soon can I have it?" "We will have it for you tomorrow sir." the salesman replied. At that, I sat my sorry college boy butt back in my Volvo and went home to count my pennies.<g> -- don New GPL Programs for the Converted Tracks: http://www.ianparker.co.uk/gpl/bapom/ You have the right to remain silent. In no particular order -- Chaparral 2E -- the winged Can-Am car first used in 1966. Not only was it revolutionary, but it was beautiful as well. Nostalgic significance for me, watching this one at Riverside, and racing my slot car of the same make. Cobra Daytona -- lots of you folks have had this one on your lists and I've got to agree. Stunning lines. I saw a gorgeous one of these at the American Shelby museum here in Boulder, Colorado, USA, this summer (driven by Dan Gurney among others). Ferrari 250 GT -- another gorgeous automobile, and you've got to include a Ferrari. 1967 Eagle F1 -- probably the best looking formula one car (or any open-wheeler, for that matter). Got to see one of these at the U.S. Grand Prix historic car parade. Early to mid sixties Jaguar E-Type (called an XKE over here) -- Might spend a lot of time in the shop, but the body is a piece of art. 1963 - 66 Corvette Stingray -- I've always loved the lines of these, particularly the convertibles. I cheated, that was six. Dave Ewing -- ***************************************************** David A. Ewing Xilinx Boulder [email hidden] *****************************************************

Impractical, but I think it looks great from the outside. That would be the 1963 Stingray, the first year they went to that body style. That one is the real collector's item. Oh, I forgot about the Chevette, or the GM "T"-car built and sold all over the world: Opel Kadett C, Holden Gemini, Isuzu Gemini, Pontiac Acadian, Bedford Chevanne, etc, etc. http://www.chevettes.com/ (a "fan" site with 215 pictures of the "T"-car) I can understand why the Chevette is considered to be the worst American labeled car ever made. If it was anything like the Vauxhall Chevette, it must have been really poor. The Vauxhalls were crap compared to the Opels (I used to work at a scrap yard in the late seventies and both makes were sold in Sweden). Stefan Barton Brown wrote:

I'll accept that - Sorry for the mistake. The car I was referring to was the convertable one which you can still buy today. Always been a bit confused about this - are the two cars related? I had heard it said that Carroll Selby would be horrified to hear today's convertable refered to as a "Cobra" - was this the reason they changed the name to "Superblower" (yuk!)? Anyway - thanks for the correction. Steve Bruce Kennewell wrote: > Steven, it wasn't the "AC Cobra" that was testing on the M1...it was the > Shelby Ford Cobra Daytona Coupe. > > --

Such a lot of great cars, it's hard to decide. I prefer a mix of 'oldies but goldies' and some modern high tech cars, e.g. Cobra 427 - a must McLaren Formula 1 twoseater - as 'copilot' of Mika Hakkinen, before lunch ;-) 1967 Lotus 49 or Eagle T1G - I'm sure I wouldn't even manage to get out of the pits :-) Ferrari F50 - every good collection needs a V12 Porsche 917 - great Jo Siffert's baby ... and many many more Werner

True, it is a Plymouth, I was thinking Mopar engines and simply said Chrysler. The big block snafu was a good catch. I realized it later but didn't worry enough about it to go back and correct. Thanks for keeping me honest. :) I never actually liked small block engines except for that 318. The really good part was how easy it was to pop the hood off and stand between the sidewall and the engine while working. Sold the car to my brother in '77 and he proceeded to total it within a year.
