Gee. After barely browsing through the 'study material' Maxx kindly sent me, I took half a second off my Watkins PB, four tenths off Kyalami and a second off Mosport. Today, after reading the discussion in the 'My GPL story so far' (or something) thread, I decided to try applying it to Monaco, a track on which I'd always totally sucked in terms of both speed and consistency. My PB was 1:36.73. No typo there. My average good lap was around 1:39.0.. At Monaco I'd always driven like a lightning: as far as the driving line is concerned, I never hit the same place twice. (and as far as guardrail hugging was concerned, I did NOT drive like a lightning) So I took a Brab F2. Within six laps had found a real, actual LINE through the alleys, something I'd never imagined could happen, and was doing easy 1:39.x times. Just like F1, except now I wasn't wrecking the car in one turn out of four. After twenty-ish laps I took out the trusty F1 Ferrari. It took five laps, and I ended up with 1:33.14. That's over three and a half seconds off the PB. So, lesson learned. Now I know where consistency comes from. Maybe tomorrow I'll take an offroad excursion to a Spa farmhouse and learn where eggs come from. BTW, can anyone tell me, how do I turn off the automatical steering ratio adjustment thingy? You know, the one that takes me from 21:1 to 7:1 at Nouveau Monde? I reckon that might help me a bit. +Cinquo [GPLrank 61.85]
Add this line to your core.ini file: [ Hack ] steer_ratio = 0 ; Enable low speed ratio override 0 disables speed sensitive steering, and 1 enables it. Thomas has the answer...and though the hack helped my starts, it hurt my hairpins. I had to take the hairpins as Rouen and Mexico...and all of monaco slower than normal because I did not have sufficient steering lock to make it through the turns. Monaco was the worst because in the hairpins I had to either go 5MPH through the turns or run into the walls to get the car to turn. So I would suggest trying it out, but watch out for those hairpins. JB "Ville V Sinkko" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8tkibg$9a8$[email hidden]...

Yes, turning speed sensitive sttering off, and running with something like 16:1 steering ratio at places like Monaco/Rouen etc. is pretty much impossible. What I do at Monaco is set the steering ratio lower, something like 10:1 It does feel a little strange at first but after 3 or 4 laps you should get used to it. If you liek it there is no reason not to try the same thing at other circuits, I find the ring was much less tiring with 10:1 and the quickness of the steering can help you catch a few slides which you may not have caught before with 16:1. Right, To make it easier for the time-being: Use some non-linear steering. The car is less nervous then on the straights. Later you will return to more linear not to overreact when catching the car after an opposite-lock. JensSchumi BTW: I use 9:1 at 100% linear on all tracks On Tue, 31 Oct 2000 10:06:34 +0000, Maxx <[email hidden]> wrote: ><snip> >What I do at Monaco is set the steering ratio lower, something >like 10:1 It does feel a little strange at first but after 3 or 4 laps<snip> --------------------------------------------- LWFF Ball Bearing conversion at: http://members.nbci.com/JensSchu/ GPLRank: -2.61

But, unlike me, you're not using a joystick, right? I use nothing less than 15:1, 100% non-linear, for my trashed Gravis Pro to facilitate straight-line driving a bit. .) I usually set up the steering lock to a point where I need almost full deflection of the stick in the tightest curve on the track, with some turning range to spare for spins and messed-up lines. With the lock changing to 7:1 in slow speeds, I can have the actual lock over 20:1 on quite a few tracks: in Rouen I run 21:1 which makes the many fast turns really delicious to drive, yet the automatical lock change enables me to negotiate the hairpin though my line through it isn't a pretty sight. +Cinquo [GPLrank 60.85]
