Hi,
Is there anywhere I can find some performance stats for GP3. I am
planning to upgrade my pc (currently 550Mhz & V3 AGP) shortly and am
looking for the best way to go. I've used 3dMark and got some advice
from that, however I want to know how much of a difference it will
make in GP3.
I thought that the processor occupancy would be a good starting point
but it does not appear to give usable results. I am looking for
something more than 'it is fine on my machine' type of information.
Any ideas?
Bob
judging from my own experience on a Athlon 750Mhz machine, the VSA-100 chip
based cards by 3dfx run GP3 fastest. The geforce2 cards are significantly
slower but I only tested the 32mb config - maybe the 64mb is faster.
I currently have a Voodoo4 4500 and little reason to complain. Less than
100% PO all the time. The Voodoo5 can run at the same speed with 2xFSAA
enabled, without FSAA it's actually slower than the V4 because of a bug in
3dfx's d3d driver. You can switch off the SLI mode in the V5 driver panel,
but no reason in doing this because it runs so well in 2xFSAA.
If you're looking for the best config for GP3, go for an Athlon 600mhz+
maching (socket athlon preferred) and a Voodoo4 or Voodoo5 card.
The V3 has some visual problems with GP3, the pallette seems a bit off,
reflections are missing from the cars and on-track detail is significantly
lower. But it still runs quite well and is fast.
GP3 ROCKS on my P2 400, 192mg ram, V32000PCI oc'ed to 163mhz.
I run at 1024x768 with all trackside objects on, fps @25.6, everything else
on EXCEPT for about 1/2 the useless mirror stuff, no textures in mirrors,
and reduced detail box checked.weather OFF. PO is normally 50-110
I run 800x600 with EVERYTHING on full, Weather ON, not check reduce detail,
mirrors on all, texture in mirrors same as front. PO w/o rain is 50-80
with rain PO is 90-110.
in 1280x1024 i can run with everything on full, no weather, no other
cars(practice mode only) at around 80-100.
this is with a P2 400, so i dont really understand all the problems people
with faster systems are having.

Running it at 1280x1024 at 27fps with every option ON.

G400Max, and lot's of memory.
GP3 runs fluid and realistic at 25.6 fr and full graphics at 1024x768
and 32bit color in hardware mode. I am very pleased with the
performance. More processor would be needed only if the highest
resolution is desired for the game. IMHO 1024x768 is quite fine!
The Matrox card isn't the fastest 3D around, but it is plenty for GP3
and I also use as Dual-Head for output to my TV set.
I think your 550 should be enough, depending on resolution,
color, video card etc. Good luck.
