Don't know if anyone's seen this book, which was published about '89, but it has country by country info on race tracks, and is illustrated by well-known F1 cartoonist Jim Bamber. His illustrations are aerial views of several tracks, most in color, some in B&W, accompanied by period photographs (and Bamber's illustrations here are not "cartoonish" -- they're quite good). Because of its publish date, there are a few modern tracks not shown (and because it's not exhaustive, a few older ones are omitted, too), but what's there is pretty cool -- including a nice B&W study of AVUS -- quick, anybody know what the initials stand for? (I didn't until I got this book in my mailbox yesterday) -- which shows better than any photograph I've seen the curious configuration of the famous North Turn. Another fact about AVUS I never knew: the banking in the North Turn is a whopping 43 degrees -- Daytona is what, 31 or so? Nice illustrations of LeMans (in the infield of which you can clearly see the "Mickey Mouse" '67 French GP circuit), Donington, Brno, Reims, Brands, Monza, Spa, Zandvoort, etc. and a lot of interesting factoids I'd never seen before -- like (quiz time) anyone know the proper name of the Charade circuit at Clermont-Ferrand? Anyhow, I picked this book up on eBay for about $US12, and I've seen it at auction many times before and since.
AVUS stands for "Undt Verrrrry Unusual Schirkut" and was coined by Henry Gibson in "Laugh In", 1967. No.....seriously but.....it stands for something else entirely, I'm sure. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- Barton Brown <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > -- including a nice B&W > study of AVUS -- quick, anybody know what the initials stand for?
Avus. Stands for 'Automobil-Verkehrs-und-Ubungs-Strasse', no really it does! Steve Bruce Kennewell wrote in message <[email hidden]>...

Hi, > AVUS stands for "Undt Verrrrry Unusual Schirkut" and was coined by Henry AFAIK, AVUS stands for "Automobil Verkehrs und UebungsStrasse", which means "Highway and traffic practice circuit" Greetings, Michael Staab -- Staabi's Mountain Bike Classics www.mtb-classic.de Mitglied in der CAR, Verein fr PC-Rennsimulationen www.car-ev.de "Sehr witzig Scotty, und jetzt beam bitte die Klamotten noch 'runter"

Arte Johnson was the comedian who did the German schtick on Laugh-In ("Verrry Interesting .... but schtupid"). Henry Gibson was the meek one who recited poetry while holding a flower. Oh bummer...I'm sorry, David. Of course it was Arte! I was thinking "Gibson" because I've just watched (for the millionth time) "Blues Bros" and the Laugh In connection kicked in. (Goldie Hawn got her break in that show too, if my memory is correct?) -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- David Ewing <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Bruce Kennewell wrote: > > > AVUS stands for "Undt Verrrrry Unusual Schirkut" and was coined by Henry > > Gibson in "Laugh In", 1967. > > Bruce, your 84 (85?) year old synapses are misfiring again. No, you were entirely correct -- except you confused Henry Gibson ("Nashville") with Arte Johnson (nowhere).

Thanks, Bart :-) Oh....a VERY nice article by Chris Nixon on AVUS circa 1937 (including a map) in the September issue of MotorSport. Highly recommended. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- Barton Brown <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Bruce Kennewell wrote: > > > > AVUS stands for "Undt Verrrrry Unusual Schirkut" and was coined by Henry > > Gibson in "Laugh In", 1967. > > > > No.....seriously but.....it stands for something else entirely, I'm sure. > > > No, you were entirely correct -- except you confused Henry Gibson > ("Nashville") with Arte Johnson (nowhere).
