Hi fellow racers,
GPL is pretty much the only windows game left on my HD. I
now have a used TNT2 Ultra lying around (32MB Version)
and wonder if it's worth the hassle replacing my Voodoo
3 2000 (not overclocked). Both are AGP cards, the cpu
is a celery 400@450.
Would the TNT2 give me better frame rates using the
D3D patch or should I keep the Voodoo 3 2000?
Thanks much in advance for your thoughts,
Uwe

My money would be on the V3.

Uwe
I would definitely use the V3 2000 . It is directly supported by GPL
without patching. The only way to get GPL to work properly with the TNT is
to use the D3D patch which isn't ideal.
Having had a 16Mb TNT card and then changed to a V3 2000 I can honestly say
that the graphics are far better using Glide. The framerate is more
consistent for a start. With my P3 800 and the V3 2000 o/ced to 150Mhz
using the v1.05.02 Beta drivers I get a rock solid 36fps with all forward
details switched on, mirrors set to cars and track, specular effects and
dynanmic lighting enabled and the detail bias set to half way. This
includes sitting at the back of the grid.
Cheers

Hey Uwe, with that rig definately stick with the V3. You won't be sorry.
When you go to an Athalon 3 ghz with GeForce IV 128 mb graphics board, that
will be the time to switch to OpenGL.
We'll both still be playing GPL then, won't we? Especially if Loki ports it
to Linux.

Voodoo 3 packed up (overheating, and I hadn't even overclocked it) - but it
was *much* slower (possibly the fault of the D3D patch).

If GPL is your ONLY concern, stick with the V3. I'm using a TNT2 Ultra
on my AMD K6-2 500 system and I get good performance in GPL, and VERY
good performance in other D3D games. If GPL is your only concern,
though, stick with the V3.

It ran reasonably well with the TNT2 in my Athlon 750, but not a patch on
the V3 performance.

I have an Athlon 650 with a TNT2 Ultra and GPL D3D is fine in 1024x768 (very
slight jerkiness with a full grid on screen) GP3 is also fine in 1024x768.
My brother has a PIII 733 with a TNT2 M64 and it's considerably slower in
both games.
Andrew
Had a P3 500 with TNT2 (nonultra) and a Voodoo2 (12MB). I liked the
image quality better with the TNT2. The Voodoo2 gave a better feeling
of speed, that was until the D3D patch came out and then the Voodoo2
left and went to work to become the UMCServer on WinVroc. It has since
left that computer and is awaiting time to be installed in another
server so that it came be on all the time . . . soon there will be a
UMCServer2.
I really like the way GPL works with Nvidia video adapters. I am
running a P3-850 with a GeForce 2 32MB DDR. 1280*1024 is nice.
