Lankhor's Warm Up! demo released to poor reviews
A Lankhor representative announced the demo of Warm Up!, an F1 game. Most who tried it uninstalled it within minutes, citing canned physics, poor control and weak sound, and joked about the demo page's text borrowed from Microids' ant strategy game. JB argued that judging every sim against GPL discouraged publishers, and the thread drifted into nostalgia for old games.

Sure the cars don't have the same sponsors as in real life, but the graphics
look pretty realistic to me. I will have to download the demo to see how
bad the physics are.

"This strategic management game unlike any other will throw you into the
brutal and amazing world of ants. Fights to the death, resource management
and life within the ants' nest. Be careful, after starting this fascinating
game you may never look at things the same way again"
That came right off the "Warm-Up" homepage. They sound really confused!

I downloaded it. It lasted 10 minutes on my machine. I tried to set it
up as a simulation. It sucked. I can't think of any racing game that was
worse. Maybe that Formula 1 game about 3-4 years ago.

I just finished downloading the 90mb demo, but thanks for saving me

here here ZZ. It did not last that long on my machine. Back to gpl for us.

Maybe somebody tossed in the splash screen code from "SimAnt" -- this

Well, who in his right mind demanded that cars in other
sims have to drive/feel like the old F1 cars in GPL. They better
try to be as real/believable as GPL, that's all...
Isn't that in some FAQ somewhere already? ;)

Frankly, if either WSC or N4 drives/feels like GPL, I'll be VERY
disappointed -- I'd be willing to bet that a modern GT/Sports/F1 car
feels MUCH different than a 1967-vintage Grand Prix machine, so I would

I don't even like GPL, but Warmup still sucks. Don't bother wasting
your time. It looks nice, but no better than anything else today and
the control stinks. The sound is wimpy and the spins are so canned
even *I* think they feel fake.

LOL! Well, I just downloaded it, and despite everybody's advice to the
contrary, I think I'm actually going to go ahead and install it.
Everybody else seems to be waiting for the next GPL, but I'm apparently
willing to accept much less.
For example, in the flight sim realm, Falcon 4.0 is undoubtedly THE
king, but although I've been out of flight sims for a while, I can
still remember back when Falcon 3.0 was tops, and if I recall
correctly, the "Jetfighter" and "Jetfighter 2" games were a TON of fun,
even if they weren't as realistic as Falcon 3.0 -- and I had a TON of
fun with Lucas Art's "Battle of Britain" game, too, even though they
didn't quite measure up to Falcon 3.0. I remember having MANY fun
battles in BoB and Jetfighter, whereas all I can really recall from
Falcon 3.0 was a LOT of frustration, punctuated by the occasional
victory. True, it WAS rewarding, but I DO like to eke out a little fun
and relaxation from my hobby from time to time.
;-)
So bring on Warm Up -- and let's just hope that maybe it (or something
else in the near future) turns out to be the "Jetfighter" of the
driving sim world, because you can bet that it won't be the next GPL
(which MAY be a good thing in some instances)!

I think that's an unfair generalization. Even though I love
GPL, I have downloaded and played (for 20 minutes even!) the Hot Chix
demo, finished Lego Racers using several cars (of my design, of
course), played Big Red Racing multiplayer (split screen) countless
times, and even enjoyed the notoriously difficult-to-control Speed
Busters.
In other words, my standards may be high, but they can also be
very low!

Same here Eldred, I spent months playing Their Finest Hour, at the
time it was an amazing game with a very high replayability rate.
A couple of months ago I tried it on my Amiga emulator... what a
bummer, how the hell could I have enjoyed this game so much?
