*LOL* I will never buy a console! NEVER!

Have you already forgotten what a pleasant surprise NFSPU was? And are
you marking DTRSC as a total loss? Seems to me like both of these
games have advanced the state of our hobby somewhat, at the very
least. NASCAR Heat DID bring us the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art
physics model yet, despite its various flaws (the "Beat the Heat"
portion almost makes up for a lot of the other problems, IMO). Then
there was F1 2000, which may have had its problems, but it DID offer an
excellent driving model -- again, the best modern F1 physics model that
we've seen to date.
All in all, it's actually been a pretty decent year IMO. And the
year's not over yet -- F1 Championship Season 2000 promises to fix all
of F1 2000's shortcomings, plus add in a new "Driving School" mode.

Before you buy.
Here's another vote for NFS:PU. It was a big jump ahead of the other NFS.
I think the original poster was looking for nothing less than a leap in
physics modelling beyond GPL. Fair enough. If you are only after progress
in physics, then nothing really improved on it. If you are looking for
improvements in graphics, then I would say NFS:PU and Rally Championship
raised the bar for really nice environmental visuals. Rally Masters gave us
a nice model for a rally sim, but again, not the super six-billion DOF model
some might look for.

GP3 was a rehash of very old code, NH is a curate's egg with a long way to
go
before it's up to the mark. SBK 2001 is a nice looking rehash of SBK2000.
In other words, we haven't really moved forward at all on the PC front.
I was speaking to a manufacturer of steering wheels recently who reckons
that the PS2 could become the sim racer's platform of choice in the future.
Far fetched? I don't think so. Have a bash at Ferrari F355 Challenge for the
Dreamcast. Try and do that on a current PC. Arcadish, yes, but with
magnificent graphics, frame rate and AI.
I for one will be pleased if the tide turns to consoles. No more costly cpu
and gpu upgrades is incentive enought to want it to happen.
Help me WSC and N4, you're my only hope.
It does seem strange that it is nearly three years ago that GPL came out and
there is nothing yet to match it.
It is good in someways as it gives people a chance to get up to speed on one
sim without being distracted by a new better sim every month. With its
online play capabilities and the high skills requirement of GPL it is going
to take something really special to take the crown. I am really hoping that
it is WSC. I hope the West brothers have the success they deserve and do not
try to push for too high a standard and never finish the program for
release. As long as they get the online play correct, I would be happy for
patchs to add extra features when they are ready.

Don't forget that Collin McRae rally 2.0 is coming out in december... that
one should be the king of rally sims... i hope...

I have high expectations of F1CS2000, but I read somewhere that the pc
version won't have the driving school. Read it on Gamespot I believe.
Not that I need a driving school ;)

Isn't the resolution on a console limited to 320x200? Yuck!

Nah,
The PS2 actually supports higher resolutions but standard TV's can't display
anything higher that 640x480 so I believe that's what most games will use.
Personally, I think the PS2 is the most over-hyped piece of junk to come
along. The PR department did a good job. When I first heard the specs for
the PS2, I considered getting one! Now that I've been able to separate the
fact from the hype, I see just how pitiful the unit is. The most pathetic
part might be the 4MB VRAM. Damn, even the Dreamcast had 8MB!
*Beware!!! Rant Below!!!*
I'm a PC lover because of the flexibility the games afford (3rd party
updates, multiplayer, etc...) It's expensive but I also use my PC for more
than games. I just hope developers don't abandon the PC for consoles.
Everywhere you turn you hear about developers complaining that PC titles
aren't selling like they want. My argument is the market is saturated with
rip-offs and sequels and people aren't interested in buying the same crap.
Notice how whenever an original game appears (e.g. The Sims), people buy it?
Another example is the bug-ridden EA Sports series. Every year, they release
it on the date of the season whether it's finished or not!! Look at
Westwood, Command & Conquer was great but since then, they've done
absolutely nothing revolutionary. Every couple of years they blow the dust
of their crappy RTS engine for another round of the same crap! Figures
people aren't buying. Less quantity, more quality!!
* End of Rant!!*
