Could some of you seasoned GPL'ers answer me these 2 questions: 1: What, in laymans terms :-), does the option "linear/non-linear steering" do in GPL. I'm gradually getting my lap times down now after going fully manual in this excellent sim (manual gear, no steering/braking help), but wonder if I should try altering the linear steering on my Logitach Wingman Wheel. 2: Can I view/save to disk a replay from an online race I have just taken part in? I take it each time you race, whether stand-alone or on-line, the replay is just saved in one big file somewhere? thanks in advance for your answers, Andy.

My understanding is that the more you set the slider towards linear, the more responsive the wheel will be to your inputs across its entire lock-to-lock range. >2: Can I view/save to disk a replay from an online race I have just taken >part in? It is not saved automatically. And yes, you can save a replay of any online race, but be advised that this "client-side replay" you'll save will have the same limitations when you watch it as you had when you were in the race, i.e., you will only be able to see your car, five cars in front of yours and one car behind yours. That's why server replays, even though they are much larger than client replays, can be a lot more fun to watch because you get to see every car that was in the race. It acts as a variable between the turn of the wheels and the speed you're going. I can't remember which way round it is but if you have it one side you'll get the same turn of the wheels irrespective of speed and with it the other side you get less turn in the wheels as the speed increases so the car becomes less twitchy as you go faster. I have it set about 1-2cm in from the left. > > 2: Can I view/save to disk a replay from an online race I have just taken > part in? Yes, just select save replay from the little replay control buttons before the race server disconnects. The length of replay you can save depends on your RAM. You can increase the replay size by adding a couple of lines to your core.ini file [ Replay ] replayMemoryOverride = 32000 This gives you 32mb for replays. GPL needs 32mb, the rest can be used for replays. Kev

Andy, the linear/non linear slider is basically to help you configure your controller's *responsiveness*. It does this for the two main types of controller, eg: analogue wheel and digital joystick. If you have a digital controller, you basically only have an on/off switch, so the steering will be either full lock, or zero. In this case you should set up GPL for non linear steering, the slider will be all the way over to the *right*. This setting gives very little responsivenes, cos with a digital controller you do not need it. If you have an analogue controller, you have much more control over the steering because it will be *progressive*, eg, the more you move the controller, the more the car will steer to one side. In this case therefore you need to set the slider more to the *left*, but how far left is a personal choice. If you set the slider all the way to the *left* you will have maximum response from the car through the whole of the controllers steering axis. This can make the car a bit too *twitchy* for some people. Personally I have a good analogue controller (an F1 Sim wheel) and I have the slider set about 3/4 of the way over from the right (about 1/4 from the extreme left). This gives me good response but the car is not too twitchy. I think most peeps with analogue devices have the slider somewhere between the half way point and fully left point. Just experiment and see which suits you best. I hope I explained that ok? > 2: Can I view/save to disk a replay from an online race I have just > taken part in? You can save any bit of driving you have done (from a few seconds up to a full race). However, if you save it and you are not the server, you will only save your car, and the five cars in front and one car behind. To save all the cars in a race, etc, the replay has to be saved from the server. To save a replay, (say after you have done a fast lap) press pause (F12) then press F2 to go to the replay screen (but your car stays on the track so you can continue racing afterwards). Rewind the replay (using the rewind button) to the point where you want to start the replay. Press the edit button (looks like a roll of film) to start saving the replay, then either press play to watch the replay, or fast forward (using the fast forward button) to the point where you want to end the replay. Press the edit button again, this will end the saving of the replay, and you will be asked for a filename. Type in a filename and press ok and the replay will be saved to your GPL/Replay directory automatically. To view the replay, go to the main GPL menu screen and select replay, then select the file you wish to view and away you go.... NB: TIP: a quick way to save a whole (including practice, etc.) race, is to go to the replay screen immediately after you have completed a race (online or offline), press the rewind to beginning button, press edit, press fast foward to end, then press edit again and give the saved race a filename. You can later (say when you are offline) go into the replay and cut it down to a smaller size (say by getting rid of the practice/qualifying bit, or just saving the fastest lap?) 8-) *Peter* - http://www.cix.co.uk/~peterpc/home.html

If you just hit the 'jump to end' button, you can save the whole replay without having to cut, or anything... <pedant> Erm, Eldred, thats what I said? "press the rewind to beginning button, press edit, press fast foward to end, then press edit again" You still have to go back to the *start* before hitting edit, or you will not get the start of the replay? </pedant> 8-) *Peter* - http://www.cix.co.uk/~peterpc/home.html

No, just make sure you're at the end, then hit the 'save' button. You don't have to go back to the beginning, or hit edit, or anything. If you don't click on any 'cut' points, it saves the whole thing, including the beginning. I do it all the time... But hey, if you want to hit 3 more buttons than you have to, it's your choice...<g> Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPL hcp. +49.12 Never argue with an idiot.
