acually, the patch is a "high" banwidth patch. It requires more banwidth,
it doesnt decreas the need for bandwdth....

This patch was posted a bit prematurely and without my knowledge --- we're
still testing. Since it is out now I have put up the most recent version
(1.1) on my own site:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~westrab/gpl.htm#more
What the patch does is make GPL show more cars in online races. Especially
the ability to see 2 cars behind will be very beneficial to online racing in
situations like:
- two front runners lapping other cars (who may be on or off the track)
- returning to the track after an off
- exiting the pits
My estimate is that about 50 % of the incidents online can be attributed to
only seeing one car behind.
Nothing for free of course: more bandwidth is required to show more cars. If
this is a problem, the server can choose to send slightly less packets
(net_..._server_send_every = 4). The bandwidth requirement of the 4/84 4/132
setting will be almost equal to the usual 3/84 3/84 settings. Latency will
be slightly increased though. Clients should also change the send_every
parameters to 4 in this case.

Damn Bart, too bad to hear that is was leaked without your permission
:((
When I first heard of the patch on VROC, 2 days ago, first thing I
asked was 'Who made it? Papy?'
Imagine my surprise when I read you did it :)
I tried it yesterday, works absolutely perfect, and I didn't notice
any increasy in disco or warping. Had a perfect problem-free race
yesterday with 6 cars in front and 2 in the rear. As you said
yourself, this makes for much safer driving.
Grrrrreat job!

Just a little tip by the way, it would be handy if you would mention
the version changes in the readme file.

I will, but only if I have control over the release. So for 1.1: everything
is new ;-)
I expect the basics will not change from here, I may add the odd tip on
getting it to work or improve readability. One major thing that I hope to
achieve is find an additional patch for GPL servers, that changes the ratio
between cars seen in front and cars seen behind. It is now fixed at 25%.
Changing the ratio would enable settings like 4 / 2 for low bandwidth
demand, or 6 / 3 for optimum visibility (instead of at least 9 / 3 now).

Erm, get another hex editor. :)
I've used a non-registered version of Cygnus v1.51 on the odd occasion.
This seems ok about saving changes.

If the program says it cannot find the string, your gpl is probably patched
already. If you're sure it's not patched and you still get this message,
please contact me.
