I did it!!! I actually completed 4 straight laps without spinning at Watkins Glen in an F2 Eagle. I had a best lap of 1:16.65, I wonder if thats fast enough for online? Nick

I wouldn't worry so much about lap times online. Worry about completeing the race 1st, going fast 2nd. I can't begin to tell you how many online races are won by simply surviving the whole race... At the Glen, make it through the start and the 1st corners and its all downhill from there! |8-) G Patricks >On Wed, 08 Nov 2000 22:32:09 GMT, "Nick, a small furry creature" <[email hidden]> wrote: >I did it!!! My typical online race goes like this: I start in the back, so much slower than everyone else. I avoid the startline and T1 carnage, because they start faster. By the time I've gone half a lap, the fast guys have checked out, I've passed half the field, and half of THOSE have disco'd, off to ruin another race. The ones who didn't disco run me off the road in their haste to pass everybody. I almost hate to pass someone who's crashed or spun, because I *know* they're gonna catch me again. I usually end up last of the cars who are still running - the only people I beat are those who disco'd... As a result, I don't run VROC pickup races often. If I wanted to drive around by myself, I could do it on my own machine... Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPL hcp. +49.12 Never argue with an idiot. Pick-up races are hit and miss but they can be good, you just need to find at least one person that races at your speed. I ran 2 F1 Monza races last night on-line. The first race wasn't anything special (actually sounded much like Eldred described) but the second one was a blast. Spent the first 4 laps nose to tail with the leader (thanks Tom S). For two consecutive laps I'd use the draft to pass him on the main straight and then he'd do the same coming into parabolica. We even went side by side through parabolica once. Unfortunately though I had a quick trip through the gravel at parabolica on the 5th lap and ended up well back at the finish (but still in second). At other races I've had other people slow down after an off just so we could race each other. As people have said before, on-line can be crappy but when its good, its *really* good. And you still are not sure if this is negative criticism or a compliment..... You don't spin often, do you? You are just slow? Do you still drive as if you have paid for the car? (Yes, I know this comment doesn't improve your driving. I just can't resist repeating it :-)) I've been reading your postings for almost a year, and have *still* not raced you. Or, more precisely: If I have raced you, I just haven't noticed it. If the latter is true, you are not a bad racer. You are just slower than me. Thing is: You have become an icon. Just like Greger Huttu, but with a negative sign. Greger obviously has earned his reputation, but your GPLrank indicates that you are not as slow as people are lead to believe. You are the anti-Greger :-) I'd rather race a slow, clean racer than a fast racer that does not race cleanly. I'm sure most people would agree with me. If you were to get a negative GPLRank, it would be a loss to the GPL community. The community needs backmarkers like you. BTW, you are getting too fast for most newbies :-) You are to the slower drivers what Greger Huttu is to the faster drivers: The goal. The benchmark. You got a cup named after you. Greger did not. You are successfull, Eldred. You are probably the most respected backmarker of all times. (Was this a negative or positive remark? :-)) LFB, Eldred. LFB. It is a useful tool for stabilizing the car while braking. Actually, when done properly, you'll find that braking distance is shortened if you brake hard while pressing the gas *simultaneously* (!) (hav to decreas your brake pressure). Also, when entering a corner too fast and the rear end tries to pass the front, applying more throttle while remaining brake pressure may be the thing to do (both provided you use 54 per cent brake balance or less (lotus)). I am lead to belive the performance (with regards to speed) is negatively correlated to age. It is my impression that the fast guys are in their early 20s, or even younger. The rest of us has experience that exceeds our guts. That is why we will never do a WR. Keep on GPL-ing, Eldred. BTW: I miss your servers. Jon Andersen

Actually, I *don't* spin often online. Wrecking CERTAINLY isn't the way to place well...:) >Do you still drive as if you have paid for the car? It still boils down to having someone close to your skill level to race against. Apparently, all the races I jump into have 'closet' hotshoes, who rocket away at the start. I'm typically about 3-7 seconds slower per lap, depending on the track. In the longer races, my goal is usually just to stay on the lead LAP.<g> In my league, I've only done it ONCE. I'm driving with LFB now. It's probably gained me a second or so on each track. Nick, better you train for 40 (or at least 14) laps without incident before going online. Only an advice. JensSchumi BTW 4 laps would be sufficient for the n-ring though ;-) On Wed, 08 Nov 2000 22:32:09 GMT, "Nick, a small furry creature" <[email hidden]> wrote: >I did it!!! He has a good point. A Monza online race is normally 11 laps. So I would make sure to get in a good amount of laps before going online...just so that you know you can run the full 11 lap race without wrecking. Hey Eldred, it's the GPL Brat again. ;) (The 13 year old with a -6 GPLRank) I just started LFB'ing a month ago. Before I used my right foot to brake, eeek!. I found that, for pretty much all courses but Monza, think like a rally driver. Seriously. (Without the pendulum turns and slowing down sideways :)) A REALLY good thing to do (especially at Zandy) is to try to keep the wheel nearly straight all the time, and turn the car into the corner with the brakes, and get it out of the end by getting on the gas pretty hard and letting it rotate, also at Zandy a bit of a pendulum turn works well. When you trailbrake into a turn, try to point the car with the brakes exactly where you want the nose to be, then run the gas into the brakes and do some modulation crap and the car is placed exactly where you want it and no speed was scrubbed off by using that damn steering wheel ;) I want to race you sometime. I usally race in a pick-up race once a day or so, usually just to drive and have fun passing people. My serious racing is in IGPLC, where I'm afraid to pass people because there's no Shift-R's and I'm 4th out of 19 in the championship, don't want to ruin that.
