There's a workaround for this, which I can't now remember - anyone?

No, it is not for online racers. It is for all gpl racers. It is at
http://gplrank.ringlord.com/ but doesnt seem to be available at the
moment.

seen all this stuff about rankings on this ng - what exactly does it mean?
Is it only for online players? I probably won't be able to play online
since my internet connection is too slow/high ping/expensive. Any help
appreciated.

Go to http://gplrank.ringlord.com/
It's not just for on-line players - the site simply uploads your best times
from your player.ini file (off-line or on-line, though there is a danger of
warping creating incorrect on-line times) and your handicap/ranking is
calculated for you.
Health Warning - it is very easy to get obsessed and end up spending the
rest of your life trying to complete a clean lap of the 'Ring...

of weeks now. I won't say I'm cured, you're never cured, but I think I'm
managing my addiction.)

I haven't submitted in 6 weeks now, mostly because I have been on four
weeks vacation and I never really bothered to get the new gplrank site
to load. Still have problems :)
But it was obsessive for some time, and without it I wouldn't bother
to lower my rank from about 60 to 25 something :)

That
was after doing an outlap - is there any way of not having to do an outlap
every time - i.e. save the race midway or something.

Hey, you wouldn't be the guy who warps into my car every now and then! LOL

Alternatively, if you don't like manual hacking, you can use a program
called "RingTrainer" which allows you to choose where on the track to
start. You can get it here:
http://www.joachimblum.de/ringtrainer.htm
It's no exaggeration to say that that program is the main reason I (just)
have a negative handicap. Highly recommended!

There is.
1) Make a backup copy of the track.ini file in the nurburg directory.
(Just in case).
2) Open the track.ini file in an editor, eg. notepad.
3) Change the "stall_0" line to:
stall_0 = 18508.00 -1.30
4) Save.
This will put your car at Schwalbenschwanz.
Don't forget to use the original values for racing!
Cheers,
Jens

Hey, thanks.
Hi Damien, and welcome to GPL...
Regarding your pings, don't let that put you off racing GPL on-line, as
it's not the pings (latency) you need to worry about with GPL on-line,
it is the quality of your connection that produces good, warp-free
racing..
Pings in F1 up to .650 ms, , F2 up to .750 and F3 up to .800 are
perfectly raceable without any warping at all, providing your quality
is above .990..
Try to achieve quality ratings of .990 to 1.000 and you won't have a
problem at all...
I have raced GPL on-line from Australia to overseas since the day it
was released, and i rarely get pings under .600 to any host at all,
with .600 to .800 being the norm and the racing is close and warp free
at those ping levels..
If you are using an analogue modem, don't be tempted to connect at 56k
for on-line racing in GPL, slow your modem down to about 24000 to 28800
and turn error correction and data compression off and GPL will provide
you with some great fun on-line..
Also download the "no-disco" patch from Papy's web site..
Cheers,
Ron Ayton

Uwe, I found a tip on your http://ringlord.com/links.html page, that
mentioned a "/etc/hosts file or its windows equivalent".
I tracked the the Windows equivalent down. It is a file named "hosts"
(no extension name) in the \windows directory. Microsoft includes a sample
file named "hosts.sam" in the \windows directory.
I copied the file "hosts.sam" to one named "hosts." (that's right,
"hosts.", no file extension) and then added the line:
"216.200.107.162 gplrank.ringlord.com"
to the bottom of "hosts", saved to disk, and get through fine now to
GPLrank.
All the best,
Chris.
