11MB download, so far the server seems to be pretty fast. Haven't tried it
yet.
Isn't DirectX notoriously hard to uninstall? In other words, if I try DX 8
and have problems, can I easily go back to DX 7.0a?

got that right. I went to dx8 and now have some awful "stuttering" in games

People in the flight-sim group have reported the same thing about DX8.
I downloaded it, but I am not installing it until all problems are
fixed and a new version is out. I think others would be wise to do the
same for now. There is no benefit to DX8 at this point in time anyway.
Maybe in 6 months or so when some games are released that take
advantage of it's extended functions.

You can actually uninstall it if you so wish. There is a hack to do so, you
need DXU12.exe and dxbackup.exe. Not that you should really need to, I've
been running DX8 on both win98se and win2K for over a month now with no
problems at all. I haven't benchmarked it very much but I have found
performance increases in quite a few games and no games I've tried out run
slower. GP3 for instance gets a nice performance gain.

It does make GP3 run slightly
quicker on my Athlon/TNT2 so it may be worth installing.
Ghost it, then try it.
That's what I do. I use DriveImage though.

What the hell did I do before Ghost? - actually I used some dodgy dos long
filename backup utility, but before that - argh, reinstall windows every 2
months!
