Yeah Jason Watt, was all lined up for Formula 1 testing when he chrashed his
motorcycle, broke his back and got stuck in a wheelchair.
He's a fighter though... he resently won his first race in the danish
touring car championship in a modified car, with all pedals moved to the
steering wheel. And he finished second at the lastest DTC race at Zandvoort.
He is now testing a LeMans car, and will be trying to qualify for this years
LeMans 24 hours.
I believe one of his biggest problems is the rule that a drivers must be
able to evacuate the car in 5(?) seconds.
The car by the way is a Panoz, and he has actually already raced it.... at
Nrnburgring !!!
3 man crew driving at that race, I have no idea how they change they
steering functions during pistops ???

Black and minority racing drivers in motorsport
A user asked whether there had ever been a black racing driver. Replies cited Wendell Scott, Willy T. Ribbs, Walter Payton, Narain Karthikeyan, Kenyan rally drivers and others, and noted a Jack Roush effort with Hank Aaron. A side discussion debated whether 'colored' was an offensive term.

Word from Jack Roush in NASCAR.com (I think) indicates that he is
working with baseball legend Hank Aaron to get a black driver into
racing, possibly in his #16 car, which, so far, is unsponsored for the
2001 season.
Drag racing also has a black motorcycle racer who is doing exceedingly
well.. I don't follow NHRA closely enough to know how he is doing. I
do know that a woman -- Angelle Seeling -- is at the top of the points
on NHRA drag bikes.
I recall there was a black top-fuel rail driver sponsored by singer MC
Hammer as part of Hammer's successful attempt at driving himself
bankrupt. The driver had a white crew and they were openly (and I
believe, inappropriately) contemptuous of the driver's skills.
There is also Liger Racing based in Philadelphia USA which is trying
to get more black youth involved with racing on all levels.
I get the impression that you do not live in the United States, which
is a country in which most people (some would argue both black and
white) have worked to prevent blacks and coloureds from having access
to the same opportunities as those in the majority. However, if your
"g'day" indicates you are down under, you can probably compare the
situation here in the US with the way the abos are treated.
Unlike other people in the US, I'm not particularly disturbed by the
term "coloured." As I understand it, it refers to the many peoples of
the world that don't fit the stereotypical caucasion/nordic appearance
and includes people from the Indian subcontinent, Middle East as well
as mixed-blood in south Africa.
My daughter is a racer -- three years in karts and now moving to
Formula Indy -- and is meeting less resistance there than I had
expected. In many ways, women have had as much difficulty entering
racing as other minorities.

Excuse my rudeness, but the only reason you don't see one is because you
haven't looked properly.
A couple of examples:
Narain Karthikeyan, an Indian (as in from India) with Jaguar this season in
British Formula 3 (4th in the championship).
In rallying, there have been several excellent Kenyan drivers, such as
Shekhar Mehta and Patrick Njiru.
In the US, there's Wendell Scott and Willy T Ribbs, and plenty of drivers
in the lower formulae - David Francis Jr, Carlin Scott etc.

Wendell Scott(African-American) actually won a Winston Cup race in 1964 at
Jacksonville Speedway Park in Florida. Also, Willy T. Ribbs(African-American)
drove some Indy Races and some NASCAR races and, from what I understand, will
be driving in the Craftsman Truck series. There have been numerous others, too.
Just not a large amount.

Not sure if he ran all season or just part of it as I haven't paid much

humpy wheeler. Wille T passed on the ride saying it wasnt up to par and
didnt ever do the test. Then an unknown driver from NC took the ride and
ran his first race at charlotte in a Winston Cup car. That ride paved the
way for him to go on and become a 7 time Winston Cup champion and win over
75 races (dunno the offical count). That driver was none other than Dale
Earnhardt. Later Willie T did run a few races in 86' i think. never did
amount to much though. I read a transcript of a interview with Bryant
Gumbel and he downed the whole sport of Nascar for not giving him a quality
ride. Poor excuse for a driver and used the race card a little too.

I remember seeing Bruce Driver back in the Flemington dirt days. I also recall
Shauna Robinson running Flemington back in the late 80s. Interresting how they
both ran the same track eh? <G>

There was some controversy since someone else did run that was not
"fully" qualified but I think it was because he had talked to Nascar
about taking into conideration his experience elswhere at those speeds
and I believe did run on the track to show them.
Unfortunately "Driver"? ran back of the pack at every event he did
qualify for and at one of the road courses he was black flagged a
couple of time for jus' tooling around out there NOWHERE near speed.
As for other "drivers of colour" Winston Cup is lite but a couple of
ranks down there are those taking their shot ( I say 2-3years at most
before they "discover" someone {hopefully good} at give him a ride.
Other series are on the way I believe IRL had(has?) a driver, Cart has
many of them there foreeners.and N-IHRA has seen a few over the years

What makes him amazing is that his legs were amputated when he was a kid in

Ribbs is still racing, now in Trans-Am, and doing fairly well. He may
have had a shadow following him for a while, though, having killed a
course worker at the Vancvouver Indy.

F5000 in the South African national championship in the early 70s as
"Team Domingo". They were "coloured" under the apartheid laws.
Multi-racial sport would have been illegal at that time, so actually
the race authorities were taking a bit of a chance... but I don't
think anyone ever complained. So actually this is a rare example of
multi-racial sport in SA, under the apartheid regime.
I did hear a story that one of the white drivers objected to the
Domingos using the whites-only public toilets in the pits - which
would also have been against the law. But since those were the only
toilets available, he was told by the organisers not to be so silly.
Strange times.
