I installed a V5 5500 last weak but contrary to most posts on the subject I
get much better fps in d3d than glide in GPL which was not the case with the
V32000 that I replaced. I can run 2xAA@ 1024x768 with a pretty constant 36
fps in d3d but in glide I have to set resolution at 640x480 to get similar
results. I expected glide to outperform d3d and wonder if I might have a
system config problem. Any help would be appreciated.

What chip setting are you using? The 'fastest perfoming' setting is NOT
as
fast as single chip or often 2xfsaa. The original drivers would not work in
2xfsaa in a race with gpl. But the newer ones do. The latest WHQL version
has just been released, 1.04. I have dloaded them but haven't had the
chance to update with them yet.
good luck

I was comparing glide vs d3d using 2xfsaa. It works in both but I'm
perplexed as to why the d3d performance is better than glide on my machine
while almost all others report the opposite. Current drivers are
4.12.01.0636(beta) dated 10/1/00.

no David, nothing wrong on ur end, same here with 2X FSAA, can't use Glide
online, FPS drops too much, try the new WHQL drivers for DX8 btw :)

I have the same thing enabling FSAA on the Geforce 2. Offline I
can do it without a performance hit, online fps drops below 20... Must be a
weird thing in GPL.

I just installed the 1.04 drivers and it allowed me to bump up from 2x FSAA
to 4x and under Glide still retain the frame rates I was getting (at the
back of a full grid @ Monza w. everything ON) before. Very nice...and
significantly better than what I could achieve under D3D.
There's a good V5 tweak-up guide here:

Thanks to all for your input. I'll try the 1.04 drivers and DX8 as well.

There have been several rumours that 3dfx has hired a drivers guru who
should have drivers out in one or two more version updates that will
noticeably increase fps. We'll see.
