I suppose the first thing I must ask in attempting to narrow down the cause
is:
Have you noticed it getting worse with each upgrade to your video drivers?
It is a common problem to have driver overlaps while upgrading video
drivers, and the jump from video modes may cause your anomolie.
Let me know..

Thank you very much for your interest.
I guess there may be a correlation with Video driver updates. In
general I have had a lot of trouble with my voodoo 2 drivers so I very
rarely update. Let me expand:
My card is a Monster Voodoo2 and when ever I use their (Diamond)
specific drivers I have massive system crashes on start up. What I
have found is that if I use the 3DFX generic drivers they generally
work so that is what I have ended up using. I am somewhat worried
about updating again because of my problems in the past.
One other thing - it seems odd that the same thing happens whether I
am using the voodoo 2 card and drivers within GPL or if I use my
Matrox G400 and the new D3D patch/driver in GPL.
It sounds like I might have to go through the dangers of cleaning out
the registry setting and the like and reinstalling drivers - but this
scares me deeply becasue i have tried to follow the instructions for
cleaning out before with little success.
Cheers,
Roger

There are many tweaks and tricks for hardware in there. Including some
hands-free patches that do the work for you.

9 times out of 10, when I close down GPL my machine crashes - either
by freezing or in many cases actuallly invokes a machine shutdown as
if I had pressed the reset button.
I have two alternative video cards (Matrox 400 & voodooII) and the
result is the same on either card.
This happens both when trying to exit from an online race session and
when playing alone.
I am using GPL 1.2 ( which is I think when the crashes became more
frequent) althjough I have lived with this for a year it seems to be
getting worse - either way can anybody give me somethings to try to
fix this..
TIA
Roger
