Ok, I guess it's my inexperience with the terms, but yes, it 's the locking
up of tires and the burning smell if it still sticks in my nose...
Just to give you an idea. I had a good qual. session ending up as 5th in the
Arrows. I tried to match the Shumi-lap times but that was completely
impossible. I should give EA the credits for that one, because in default
setup, there was a clear difference in performance on the A1-track between
the Pedro-Arrows and the Ferrari. Mostly the time differences were the
result of lots of oversteer at two sections of the track, but the biggest of
moments was at the penultimate right turn before the straight. That's were
you dive downwards, and the Arrows is just pushed into the gravel when
driving the same speed as the Ferrari. !
Then I take up the race. I lost three places before the first corner, and
than I wanted to charge it a bit. I had Eddy in front of me, and he locked
up. Went passed him quickly ending up behind Ralfie Boy. He locked up too,
givin a puf of smoke right 'in my face'. At the end of lap two I overtook
all the boys (third race I tried it...) and all of them continued to smoke
heavy pipes until lap 6. Than the smoking stopped (mirror view) and they
went all over me. But I never locked up my tires, I didn't see that, so I
should have had a proper set on the car. But away went the traction.
The smoke itself is also weird. It's far to dense, and it comes quickly but
it doesn't 'hang in the air'. It's gone before you know it. Nah....
GPL, no I don't. I'm too much hooked up with the modern F1 car to exchange
it with an old one. Unless things can be updated or something... that could
make it more interesting.

I recently decided to check how good the new F1-sims really were, because I
wanted to know the improvement of the them compared to the sims I used to
play. I 've played F1RS and MGP2 for years now, and strange as it may seem,
I still like the oldest version best. But that certainly has to do with
'getting used to' and 'the first time playing the game' (nonono, I mean the
game...)
So I decided to buy the new games and the first one was F12000. Only 12
dollar and the mailman delivered it for free, so actually the game did not
cost anything. Installed all the stuff I needed, patched it up to 1.09,
renewed the carsets (a must I think), and raced and raced an raced.....
First of all I still do not like the FF in the game. It's mist to me why the
FF acts like a dragline in the pitlane, but when you leave it and get on
track, there's not a 30% left of it. After al the advice I got the cars
still seems to slide across the tarmack, no real feel of driving it. But you
can get used to it...
Nicely organised, this sim. Good graphics, but mainly until you start
driving the cars. Even at 1024*768 it still wasn't the most beautiful thing
I've seen in the sim-world. Tracks look empty, so I think that will need a
patch as well. What is an enormous improvement compared to the older sims,
is the layout of the circuit. Maybe they are not correct in terms of exact
layout in all of the cases, but most of all the elevation in some tracks do
make the driving a lot more interesting. And one thing should be said, the
over and understeer coming from this is well modelled in the cars.
What is a good improved as well, is the way the cars handle break and
accelerator-driving. It really works unlocking the rear wheels by giving it
a bit of juice when in full breaking. Also, you can make nice slides right
through the cornes, like a schumacher drifting to make a fast lap.
But, there's more..and it's not something positive. When in the end you want
to race, you want to get the most out of it. I'm used to change my setup
using telemetry to check out what the cars do. This game does not have the
feature. Also, I didn't find a way to trim the engine. I can't limit the
revs e.g. combining it with different gear settings. But again, Most of all
I miss the telemetry...
But it's not the lack of rain in the game, it's not the rough way some
opponents do seem to handle you, it's this stupid graphics engine placing
cars at various distances. Even with maxed viewing distances ( I've got
pretty much everything maxxed or 'good' and still proper FPS with all cars),
but also in 'good' or any lower setting, cars that overtake you seem to
disappear like starship Enterprise doing a 6 Mach journey to Mars. They
simply disappear into a tiny pixel in front of you. And it's the same way
they pop up behind you ! Nah, the whole thing is completely distorted in
this way. And some tings are very much overdone like the features of brake
dust coming from the car in front of you.
To cut it short, when you take the game for a race it's a huge
disappointment. I've done quit some karting, and I at least should have some
idea about certain visual effects during a race. And it's nowhere close to
it.
So what did I do with it ? Well, it's still on the disk. And I'll keep it
that way. Because I will get GP3 now, and compare it with eachother. And I
will get a good idea how much of an improvement there really is compared to
the two Ubisoft F1-sims from the past. Because with a 2000 carset F1RS, with
640*480 and anti-alliasing on, it still has a very good 'race feeling'. And
the 3-D quality may not be perfect, but compared to what I've seen in
F12000, it's not worth the change yet.
Finally, somewhere in February Ubisoft will bring out it's PC-version of
their latest sim. With proper improvements compared to the older versions,
I've got a feeling this sim will be hard to beat.

Are you sure that "brake dust" isn't the cars in front locking up the brakes
and smoking the tires? I know when in a big race (full field), when all the
cars get to a tight turn bunched together, they all end up going into the
turn a little deep and lock up the brakes....it is pretty realistic to see
the AI making mistakes...not sure what you are seeing as brake dust...maybe
it is something different that I havn't seen in the game.

PS do you play GPL much?
