Hello, all!
Well, it's the end of an odyssey, people...I've have been high and low all over
my freaking city (Montreal) to find this game, all to no luck! But
www.dragon.ca came through for me (note to any that are still interested in
finding this game).
I still remember the first time I tried the demo for GPL a month ago, and I
just heard that engine sound of the Grand Prix car...when I wrecked horribly on
that first corner at Watkins Glen, I knew I found something special, LOL!
That same day my brother happened to be over and he happened to walking by my
room when I was replaying the file of Matt Sentell driving the Ferrari...my bro
just burst in saying "Holy Shit....what the Fuck is that?!?"...and he stared at
what was transpiring on the screen in stunned silence (I think the last game my
brother really got into was World Circuit by Microprose). All he said was "You
gotta get me a copy!!"
And now here I am with my TWO (count 'em) copies of GPL!! One is going straight
onto my hard drive as I write this, LOL...and the other is destined for
Christmas gift wrapping for my bro. I also got him Viper Racing (when I've
owned and still enjoy for almost two years!).
Question: Why are these two games, some of the best driving games ever made, so
hard to find and under-fucking-appreciated? It's damn near criminal...
Anyways, thanks for reading, people, and thanks especially to the guy who
pointed out dragon.ca to me...you're place in heaven is secured, my friend!
Soon to be spinning and burning like the rest of you (j/k),

New GPL owner celebrates finally finding the game
A Montreal player described finally obtaining Grand Prix Legends and being hooked. Veterans welcomed him and noted cheap Sierra re-release bundles with Viper Racing. Discussion turned to why GPL sold poorly despite its quality, with time and patience cited as barriers.
Automated summary.
Never played Viper Racing, but it's a question asked about GPL every day! Hopefully
more and more people will just pick it up. I can see this game lasting another 5
years or so, hopefully longer. There will probably never be another sim like it.
Good Luck, don't give up...
Hope you like my sig :)

Someday we are going to rule the WORLD!!!! GPL spreading = total domination

What's impressive is that this game is what, 3 yrs old now and we're still
excited about it.
I haven't touched F12000 in four months. I've been doing lap after lap of
GPL trying to get good enough for on-line racing.

For anyone in Canada reading this thread... try Office Depot. Last time I
was there they had about 25 boxes of the Sierra Classics edition.
Maybe I should stock up and sell them in a few years :-)

I thought I'd add a footnote:
I'm also the guy who asked the question about why no one's talking about NFS:PU
anymore... I've been playing GPL for the past 3 bloody hours (my hands are
cramped, dammit!)...
...I no longer need the answer to this question, LOL!

What a coincidence! I've just got it from dragon.ca too:)
Today I have seen both of them (GPL and Viper Racing) in one bundle
in Compucentre in Montreal for 29.99 :)

Now that's a bundle worth picking up, as a spare if nothing else. Think
I'll load up Viper Racing just for old times sake...

In the modern age people tend to equate "challenge" with "hard work". And
hard work isn't fashionable. But it is so very, very rewarding... except
when I'm at work, in which case it's very tiring and tedious :-)
Andrew McP... who coincidentally bought his third copy of GPL this week
(1st time I'd seen the 10ukp sierra originals box on sale anywhere). I
intend to have enough legit copies for a 20 player home LAN whenever I
finally start to make real money... it's bound to happen any decade now
;-)
PS Welcome!

It's not under appreciated, only under recognized. For the people that
owns it is the most valuable treasure in the house...

I think we GPL'ers have to face up to the fact that 9 out of 10 Racing Game
buyers lack the following requisites to make GPL a success (for them or for
Papyrus).
1. Time. Spare time. Lots of it.
2. Patience. GPL doesn't reward until you've put lots of #1 in. Until then you
drive and feel like a chimp. Rather less upbeat than a chimp, actually.
3. Software Competence. You can't get the best out of it unless you patch to
1.2, patch to d3d (maybe), patch the Profiler (maybe) download setups, install
VROC, tweak everything.
4. Hardware. I'll bet that very few frequent GPL'ers have not modified their
hardware configuration to help them with the game. Steering wheels, graphics
cards, sound cards, headphones blah blah
5. Cash. Cash for hardware, cash for online time, cash for paying off your
estranged wife...
The rewards are wonderful. But the price is pretty high (no matter what the
sticker says).
I'm just glad there's a community of people who are as nuts as I am.

However, none of these people rushed out and bought the game.
I guess everyone has different agendas about what they do with their
spare time. You tell me why Age of Empires 1 and 2 are so poplular? It
doesn't hold any interest to me at all, it sucks! And I used to play
C&C, Red Alert, and TA for a long time, A of E doesn't even come close
to those classics. Need for speed, although fun for a few hours,
doesn't come close to GPL either, but they continue to make money, you
figure.
I think it's got something to do with advertising and being on
the front shelves of the software department, and bla bla bla....

safe to say that we racers aren't the only ones sucked into hours on end of
computer gaming (though I still don't really understand the appeal of the
Quake-like fragfests). There were days I spent 12 hours or more in
Everquest, and I know more than a few who spent 24+ consecutive hours in it.
The problem is racers are a small niche, and while hordes of teenagers
(which is unfortunately the largest age market) can jump right into
something like Everquest, race sims don't have the same general appeal. I
think the gpl community is better off as a "tell your friend" group of
racers. I wish it would have sold better, but since the engine is being
used for N4 which will have a larger market, I think the guys at Papy will
probably venture into another gpl-esque side venture in the future. I just
hope I'll be able to afford all the gaming goodness in the years to come=)
And if you think gpl requires patience, you should talk to some EQ addicts.
I'm done with the massively multiplayer RPG's until they get rid of the
boredom factor, that game is truly insane.
