Hi,
Is my ISP (cable modem) operating a firewall on our behalf (I hope not!)
I'm trying to host GPL Internet racing.
I can join races but I cannot host them.
I'v totally disabled ZoneAlarm security software (and rebooted) .
I've checked my ports and shields Using 'Shields Up!'
Shield Up! reports:
Shields -
Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
Port Service Status Security Implications -
21 FTP Closed
23 Telnet Closed
25 SMTP Closed
79 Finger Closed
80 HTTP Closed
110 POP3 Closed
113 IDENT Closed
139 NetBIOS Stealth!
IMAP Closed
443 HTTPS Closed
Can anyone tell me what's going on and is there anything I can do about it.
Interestingly, if I logon to my ISP through dialup modem I can host races.
Obviously this is hopeless for serious racing.
Thanks
Alan
I don't think you have a firewall problem.
Do you have the following entries in your core.ini file?
[ Communications ]
alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1
If not, that is your problem.

1. Connect to a VROC racelist, http://www.vroc.net
2. Ask someone to ping your IP by opening a MS-DOS box and typing "ping
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" to verify you are being seen.
3. Try non-dedicated hosting first using the VROC host menu option.
4. Turn off the "skip connection screen" option. This will allow you to
verify the connect which GPL is using.
5. When GPL starts, make sure you select the the TCP/IP port to accept
connections on. This would be the same port in which you use to join
races.
If you don't see your internet TCP/IP port as an option, add the
core.ini entry noted by Gordon:
[ Communications ]
alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1
That should help you get started on tracking this down.

stop the spread of some trojan? virus. Are you with Bigpond? If not...
perhaps some other ISPs have been forced to do the same?
