wheels normally have 4 paddles...usually top right up, top left down and the
other 2 are for clutch....
but it is software configurable...
The F1 sim people are bringing out an f1 wheel with 2 analogue and 2 digital
paddles on it on their next incarnation of the F1 sim ff wheel....

Alright, no doubt this is a "duh-kinda-question", but...........
In a real F1, which paddle is used to shift up and which to shift down
(right or left)?

As cyril said before me some of them use the left paddle for clutch, some
other use right-up and left-down and have just a sort of bike brake pedal on
the top for the clutch which you only really use once anyway.

Left is up and right is down. My
clutch is on a peddle. One thing I have found that bothers me. It is VERY
difficult to get use to shifting with paddles and using the clutch. I guess
its just my farmboy upbringing but I keep reaching over to the right to grab
the shifter. <g> I guess Im going to have to do a mod to add the shifter.

NO! not always, there are F1 drivers who have it the other way around,
JaquesVilleneuve I think, but don't quote me on that. Anyway, does it really
matter?

Left is down and right is up, always.
Not trying to split hairs here, but Villeneuve has both on his right
paddle, towards him for up, away from him for down. Maybe a holdover
from his CART days? I don't know how he does it with gloves on.

I *think* I read that he does this because he has a clutch paddle or lever
on the left. Something to do with the fact he doesn't like the push-button
clutch and prefers something with a bit of feathering ability for starts.
