They actually didn't cross over. The system was that the start/finish-straight was used like a two-lane street. The cars coming out of the Parabolica drove on the right "lane" towards the now closed first banked curve. When they had completed the oval, they rejoined the s/f-straight on the left "lane" (in GPL there is another barrier, you can see it if you drive the s/f-line backwards: it is the "Coke"-billboard on the right side of the Parabolica) and drove towards Curva Grande. So the car's paces didn't cross over each other on the s/f-straight. But they did on another part of the track, just before the Ascari. Here, the first banked curve leads over the track, that's the little tunnel you're driving through when you're coming out of Lesmo II and drive towards the back straight. If you stop after the tunnel and turn around, you can see a part of the banked curve leading over the track (it's that part where Yves Montand had his horrible crash in the Film "Grand Prix").
HTH!

Crash
I was watching the movie "Grand Prix" and I'm confused about the curved
banking, and how exactly they used to drive a lap back in those days.
In GPL, there is a point after the start/finish line where the road splits
and leads to this turn. You can't actually drive onto it as it's closed off.
So when it was part of the lap, as in the movie, did they, for example, go a
lap where they would turn onto the banked turn, and then as they came around
and back onto the s/f straight, go straight on and complete the rest of the
circuit ?
Was it done in this alternating way, or some other way ?
Any help much appreciated.
There is no cross-over, Luke.
Have another look....they start on the left-hand side of the pit straight
and head off to the Curva Grande and what we know as the GPL circuit.
When exiting the Parabolica, and coming back onto the main straight, they
are on the right-hand side of the pit-straight and at the end of that the
oval starts.
When they exit the oval they are, once again, on the left-hand side of the
pit-straight.
