Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing review

Francois Menard posted a glowing review of Synetic's Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing, calling it the best title of 2000. Others noted its multiplayer was weak and that it was hard to find in shops, while demo players praised it highly. The thread drifted into German words in VW commercials.

Gentlemen, we have found the best title of the year 2000. Rush to your local software store and beg them to reserve you a copy of the title. It's a pure gem. Synetic here has given us a game engine with a great potential that delivers quality. It was released in Germany a couple of months ago, but they finally did the international version, giving us finally a way to understand what "Keirtsichtein" (or something close) meant in the option menu of the demo :) [Synopsis] : Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing puts you in control of 8 fully licensed truck cabs as you race your way through intense competition. A realistic physics engine and authentic looking 3d cockpits and exterior graphics make you feel as if you're truly behind the wheel of a big rig. That is absolutely true. The experience here is very well replicated. The sensation are very well depicted and you will find yourself immersed in those trucks. The number of features is quite intensive and will satisfy the most hardcore simracer. It is very close to the quality of GPL. I repeat, _very close_. You guys know what that means? Installation : Typical game installation. It's quite hefty in size, but there is quality. You are given the option of multiplayer clients also, so that you can install multiple network LAN clients on other PC without the need for a CD. Interface : Before launching the game you are given a setup configuration for some important settings of the simulation. I would had preferred to have such options inside the game, but there is tons of possible tweaks you can do here, including a surprising multiplayer packets setting depending on the bandwidth you have. The in-game interface is very intense, with an incredible number of options. Game engine : This is where the sim shines. The truck handles like their real-life counterparts. You feel the weight transfer as you corner. You feel the contact between you and other drivers (sliding into a corner touching another trucks is a normal part of such racing series). They are sluggish as you would expect, but that's the fun of it! You shouldn't expect Formula One handling here, but that doesn't make it easier. It is as hard to be fast, the sensation is actually very close to GPL as you need to powerslide them cabs exiting the corners, and really use ALL the track width. The AI is also excellent. They are very aggressive, and fight in a realistic way. You will find challenge for all here. They are tough! Most of the time you will think that a wreck is their fault but most of the time YOU are in the fault. Sound and graphics : Crisp is the word to describe the situation. Those trucks have an amazing level of detail. The visible damage made me drool. You see the sheet metal that come loose, skid marks, brake lights that breaks, etc... But don't think it's done in a cheesy arcade way, au contraire. The tracks are very well modeled. The number of elements is as high as any other title on the market. The 3d modeling is incredibly well done, especially since you can go about everywhere on the track. Inside the pits, into the garage or alternate routes, it's all there! Not since Motorsims AMA Superbike have we seen such quality track models. The only fault I can give here is some cracking sound in the engine, but it's probably an option I need to enable here to eliminate it. I can't replicate the sound from the demo unless I'm racing from the outside. The cockpit view is very well done, so I would want to have such sound from inside the truck. Each event of a weekend is here. It's a little complicated, but after a few sessions you will understand the basic differences between the events. The setup menu is very good. It doesn't have hundreds of settings, but that is not the point. You can't tweak much those trucks, and every possible garage tweak is there for you. Even the level of brake fluid. The control menu is very well done. Kudos to Synetic. You won't have a controller problem here, it supports Z and rZ axis, and ACTLab's RS shifter. I cannot comment on the Force Feedback as I dislike such thing (I always feel that the feedback is given to me after the events depicted on screen). I have yet to also test the multiplayer system, but early reports give it good marks. It must be darn fun to bump them cabs against other humans! Everybody will love the title. They have an attraction for all of us. They may look silly, but the title is NOT silly. It's a racing simulation, and we darn need them these days. Let's support them for such quality title and BUY IT! It's a great Christmas gift for ourselves. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.

Sounds great! EB doesn't list it though. Where did you pick it up from? (.....and what was the price?) ymenard wrote:

I think it was "ausgezeichnet," which is "outstanding." I remember a Golf GTI driver uttering the word as he let the smoke out from under his helmet visor There was also "fahrvergnugen" which is "driving pleasure." I also remember "Wir putzen das Auto" from a German class dialog. Anything with "Auto" in it is fine, but I'm not sure about being called a "putz." No, it wasn't quite that old. He was driving a second generation Scirocco in the commercial. It was probably around '85 or so. S.

Today I downloaded the demo. The sim seems to be really good! (I do not remember the address, Google search found it easily by the name "Mercedes-Benz Truck Racing", though...) In the demo you have only Zolder track, and many of the options are limited. But clearly now, at last, there seems to be something new with quality in the sim market. In the demo you by the way can choose between English, French and German, the size of the only one exe-file is a littele more than 50Mb. It will create all the necessary demo elements. In my modest PII350, Voodoo2, the fps' are very good.

This is true! Only GPL (and N4 demo) seem to be comparable. Well, perhaps I am biased, but MBTR perhaps doesn't really come to the level of GPL... ;-) What would? ;) >The AI is also excellent. I would have liked to try also that, but it is not included to the demo. Anyhow, the sim seems to be so good that I'll buy it anayhow, when it comes to the shops. I suppose this quality of programming must (or at least should) have a good implementation of force feedback? >Everybody will love the title. They have an attraction for all of us. I think that it is one of the 10 best sims I have ever played, based upon the demo. Does anyone know when or if it will be available in the U.S.A.
