HELP!
I just upgraded my two-year old system to the following:
MSI K7T Pro2 motherboard
AMD Duron 800MHz @ 1000MHz
ELSA Gladiac GeForce2 GTS 32MB
768MB RAM
SoundBlaster Live! 1024
Sidewinder FF
..and GPL refuses to run - always failing with
"Could not initialize replay system." and "Canceling the Weekend."
I have tried v1.0.0.0 and the v1.2.0.0 (or whatever the latest
patch was) in software, d3d7 and opengl modes, and always getting
the same error. However I can view the replays OK in the
"View replay" menu, and they run just beautifully.
I don't think it's GeForce2 related, since I tried GF2 on my
old system and it ran GPL just fine.
I wasn't able to find any reference to the problem, let alone
a solution for it. Any suggestions for solving the problem
would be extremely welcome! GPL, afterall, was my main reason
for upgrading the system - V2-SLI just wasn't smooth enough.
Oh yeah, to save some time: yes, I do know Windows9x/ME cannot
handle 768MB memory without modifications to the system.ini, and
yes, I have defined max/minfilecache and chunksize. So that's
not the solution.
Thanks in advance,
-Jari

I have a nasty feeling I heard somewhere that GPL does not like 512Mb or
greater of RAM. I'm not certain of this but you could try taking out a DIMM
and running GPL with less RAM.
Cheers

This is just a stab in the dark: Try fixing the replay size in your
core.ini file as follows...
[ Replay ]
replayMemoryOverride = 16000
This will give you 16MB of replay space. If this fixes the problem, you
can bump up the replay size as needed.

Thanks, Phil. I think you're right. I plugged out a DIMM to get down
to 512MB, and GPL ran flawlessly (in D3D, in OpenGL I only the
view filled only a quarter of the screen with the rest of the
screen flickering in cyan/black - what's that all about?).
I hope there's a fix for the problem. I wouldn't fancy disassembling
the box every time I feel like playing a little GPL - and that's
rather often.

Thanks, Jason - I'll give it a shot. Got to plug the DIMM back
in first to stop GPL from running ;-)

Indeed the problem was with the amount of memory Windows 98 is seeing,
and reporting to GPL. I found two solutions for the problem
1) Remove a DIMM module every single time you want to play GPL, or
2) Limit the amount of memory to less than 512MB using the MSCONFIG.EXE
(found in \Windows\System)
The second solution is obviously the more elegant one, and since Windows
98 takes advantage of large amounts of memory very poorly indeed, it
doesn't actually do much harm.
