Start out in a Cooper F3, it is by far the easiest (realitivly
anyway), stick with that for a few weeks TO LEARN THE TRACKS, and then
I'd say move up into the F2 car of your choice, and start
concentrating more on your lap times. When you are able to get some
good laps in the F2, go ahead and go GP!

You'll get more improvement from getting the technique and line down solid -
once you're able to lap consistently with the default setups (or
conservative downloadable setups like Alison's), then you might want to try
to tweak things.
Enjoy!

Hi all,
I just got GPL a three days ago, this is my first real racing sim and
I'm just wondering how am I doing... I do have some real life racing
background but this is completely different. I'm using Act-Labs Force
RS and shifter, and it's hard to control with this setup.
Training: Monza
Lotus grand prix version, best lap so far is 1:46:xx This is default
settings with 22 liters of fuel.. How am I doing so far? This is after
no more than 15 laps on the track, and like 5th laps for the grand prix
version? Do you think I can improve much with tweaked settings?? Coz.
I'm able to give up until Act-Labs come out with a better pedals....
Thanks!
Thanks for the advise :) Should I touch the settings at all or should I
leave it alone till I go GP? Thanks!

Regardless of whether you
choose to drive F3, F2 or F1, don't worry about setups for a while. You've
got enought to handle learning racing line, braking points, and how to
handle these beasts effectively to keep you busy -- and dropping your
times -- for months to come. When you can string together 10 laps within a
second of one another, maybe come back and inquire about setups. The
defaults, especially with the patch, are pretty good.
Have fun.

Practice, practice, then practice some more.... You are starting out by
driving the hardest formula (GP), and also by driving the hardest GP car
(Lotus). You will do yourself a big favour by starting out in one of the
lower formula's (F2 or F3 trainer cars) and by choosing one of the
esaier cars such as the Coventry (Cooper), BRM, Murasama (Honda), or the
Brabham). The harder cars to drive are the Lotus the Eagle and the
Ferrari.
One other tip, (if you haven't already done so?) turn *OFF* all the
driver aids, it will be hard at first, but ultimately, you will learn
how to handle the cars much better.
Try to learn the basics of good car control, smoothness in braking and
accelerating, keeping to a good line, consistency, etc. Don't try and
brake any World records after only a few laps, work on technique and
keeping the car on the track and the speed will come.
I would stick to one track at first, Monza is good, to learn the basic
car control techniques, then when you are happy and your laptimes come
down a bit more, move on to other tracks/cars/formula's.
Most new drivers aim to beat the times in the original sim's replays. As
a benchmark, times around 1:30 or under are considered good for the GP
cars at Monza.

I'd stick with the default settings until you are much more familiar
with cars and tracks, you can make the car worse unless you know what
you are doing. There are lots of good sites on the net with loads of
helpful GPL stuff. Try my GPL webpage (see the url in my sig, and go to
the GPL section) and try some of the GPL links, Alison Hine's website is
an excellent starting point...

Yes, but your real life is only just beginning... :)

It's a good start but you need to be down to around 1:33-34 before you start
to worry too much about setups. The defaults are good for at least high 29's
in the right hands. Downloading hotlap setups at this stage might put you
off for life. Most are extremely sensitive and undriveable in beginners
hands. Come to that, many experienced drivers would have trouble with some
of these.
The only way to get those times tumbling initially is to keep lapping. good
luck.

Coz. > I'm able to give up until Act-Labs come out with a better pedals.... > > Thanks! Thanks guys!! I'm down to constant 1:36s today, I don't have any
driving assistant on since day 1 :) Still trying to get a better feel
of the Lotus, the reason I chose Lotus is because knowing it's the
hardest, if I manage to get used to it, I'll be ready for others too :)
The hardest thing for me right now is braking... The Lotus seems to be
very unstable when braking from high speeds, especically with the
#@%@!#!% Force RS pedals. If only I can learn how to brake more
constantly, I think I can cut down the lap time by a whole lot.
GPL is a very challenging game, and I guess it will last me for years.
Best $8.95 I've ever invested :)
Thanks!
